I dove for the first time in a few years the other day in Cancun with Aqua World and had a very eventful dive. My first dive at the reef @~45ft ended early due to some ear pain and a bit of trouble equalizing. I surfaced and everything appeared fine. The second dive at the MUSA was fine and I completed the dive without problems. After getting out of the water I started experiencing some ear pain and my ear could not stay cleared. Now I have had non stop drainage going on day 3, slight vertigo when standing rapidly and my ear still won't stay clear. I am now in Cozumel with a week worth of diving planned and want to see a doctor if there are any affordable ones here.

Does anyone have any recommendations for a doc here in cozumel?

On a side note the Aqua World crew was amazing, a small snorkel boat near us suffered an emergency on board with a snorkeler. The crew sent three dive masters into the water to board their boat and administer emergency first aid and oxygen to the unresponsive person they had on board. They worked on him for about 10-15 minutes until he was apparently stabilized and then we went on to pick up the rest of our divers in the water. There were several divers with us that had been diving for 15+ years and they had never seen a crew act so professional and quickly in an emergency situation as they did.

You should post this in the Cozumel Forum. Go to Dr Dario Gomez at Cozumel Medical Center He is the DAN preferred doctor and a hyperbaric specialist. You do have DAN insurance I hope.

Hi, @penywisexx

I also hope you have DAN but if you don't and have your own medical insurance, I would start there. Check with them to see if there is coverage outside of the United States and if so, whether there are any in or out of network providers in Cozumel or Playa del Carmen you could go to. Check with your policy and their website - it should give you a locator that you can use. Obviously, try to stick with in-network first before you go out. :)

Good luck!

I will give him a call tomorrow, unfortunately I don't have DAN, and I have VA for health care so I am thinking I am screwed on that front. I talked with a friend of mine who is a trauma doctor in Florida who deals with a lot of diving injuries and she recommended some drugs for me to use but unfortunately they are prescription only here, even in Mexico. If a mod could move this to Cozumel forum that would be awesome.

Hi,@penywisexx.

In the future, I highly recommend getting GeoBlue travelers health insurance. They can act as primary coverage at in network locations. Out of network they can reimburse 100%. It can cover pre existing conditions as well. I usually buy $1 million with $0 deductible and it's not much. I want to say for 10 days in Mexico it was less than 30 bucks but based on age and zip code.

There are limits to Scuba related medical issues but I imagine this might be general enough that it could be covered. Chamber is another issue....

Get well soon!

You might contact your Florida MD friend and see if Soldrin Otico ( SOLDRIN-OTICO ) might help for temporary relief, it can be gotten at the pharmacy in Chedraui (behind the counter, you have to ask for it).
You may be surprised at how reasonable medical care pricing is in Mexico since there is often no insurance companies to skew the market. Last couple of times I used a walk in clinic the charge was less than $20 with prescriptions, a couple years back I went to the emergency room at the San Miguel clinic on a Sunday night for a Lion Fish sting and was charged $23.

My girlfriend was having ear problems while on Cozumel last December. We went to the Meditur where they have the hyperbaric chamber. She saw DRA Viridiana Arroya. I believe she got the best treatment possible. Located at Calle 19, #9. It was not cheap, about $80 US but she began to improve immediately. I was thoroughly impressed with this doctor's knowledge and understanding of dive-related medical conditions.

I will take $80 for a doctors visit no problem, I will check out the San Miguel clinic later today and let you guys know the damages and diagnoses. ScubaLuis is being totally awesome and is taking my wife out solo this morning as his other passengers called him this morning and had to cancel due to illness.

That's cool. Tip lots
