Hi all. Currently planning the husband's birthday trip and it's looking like the Maldives. What area should I be focusing on at this time? We are looking resort vs. live aboard.

Thanks!

You will most likely find the liveaboards more affordable than the popular resorts. However, there is quite a selection of home stays and budget resorts.

If diving is your major goal, liveboard is much much more interesting :). Not much to do or see in these islands if you are not an honeymooner.

There is a compromise that can be made. Several smaller boutique guesthouses in the Maldives are providing excellent dive services now. This can be price conservative, with great dives and a more authentic Maldivian experience

Very unfortunate that he won't do a liveaboard. Best of luck. Oh and why focused on Maldives fo diving if not going to try to take advantage of seeing the best available on a given itinerary?

I used to be anti-liveaboard until I went on one. :)

June /July should be monsoon winds from the SW so if looking at a resort for easier access to diving spots, aim for the eastern side of an atoll. That said, more adventurous diving can be had on the western sides... but if the ocean swell is too great you may have trouble getting out to the channels.

As always, your budget will dictate which resort you stay at.

We are just back from a weeks liveaboard plus 5 days on one of the islands. The liveaboard was far far far better in terms of the diving experience , the quality of the guides and the fun factor than the resort. We went with a UK company Blue o 2 and cannot say enough good things about the experience. We have done 9 previous liveaboards including Raja Ampat and Komodo and this was incredible.

The island was very beautiful and we greatly enjoyed the beach and the seascapes and the pool and the food. However the costs were astronomical...$12US plus 23 per cent tax and service charge for a small glass of wine. We were also totally underwhelmed by the dive centre and the service , where we were charged extra for the boat trip...plus 23per cent of course. Having said that the dive sites were the same as we visited on the first day of the trip....on the check dive and on the last day we had 20 minutes with a manta ray.

We also heard great things about Dharavandhoo Island which has new very nice locally run hotels and is near the famous Hanifarou Bay where we snorkeled with 26 mantas.

Enjoy your trip!
