if GUE is a small agency will it be accepted internationally? could be an issue if the op wishes to go to countries where diving is so developed and they only know of padi?

Hi,

Diving is a great experience and becoming a diver will probably change your life for ever! I'm on the island of Lanzarote, Canary Islands. There are many dive shops but i would highly recommend Aquasport diving, here is the website www.aquasportdiving.com; The dive center is in Puerto del Carmen where you do most of the dives. It is a great place to start diving! Don't hesitate to contact them! You won't regret it!

There are many agencies out there that are universally accepted. It's always possible to run into a dive op who will only accept cards from a specific agency ... I ran into one in Maui one time ... but it's very rare. GUE is small, but pretty well known. And I can't imagine you'd have much difficulty getting your GUE card recognized, particularly with their reputation for thorough dive instruction.

I'd second dbulmer's recommendation to the OP to not take up photography until you have some dives under your weightbelt ... the task-loading associated with using the camera can be an inhibitor to skills development, and it can also lead to issues involving buddy separation ... which can be serious for the beginner diver.

Have a look at BSAC in the UK. As a club they do both teaching and trips including overseas ones. I think you can do your course in Malta don't quote me on that. My experience is that they are a friendy bunch of scuba enthusiats.
It's warm this year so doing your Open Water in the UK would be a good idea.
This will give you a much better holiday experience as you won't be worrying about passing the skills.
Warning, you will be a new diver so explain that to the resort you choose and look for one with a very positive reputation here on Scubaboard.
Try and get a few dives in before you move towards an advanced course.

Have fun it is a great sport and keep us posted on your decision.

Thank you everyone. I will look at it all. I'll let you know what I decide. I am in Tamworth. Staffs Mustard Dave.

Hi there

Going from the UK to Egypt to do your OW on a package with a specialist company such as Scuba Travel is a brilliant idea and you simple won't better it for price , value , clarity of water and excellence of marine life. How these companies do the trips for the price I can never work out , but hey they do.

BSAC is an excellent organisation , but it will take many months to get through your course. The PADI open water course can be done in 3 or 4 days. If all goes well you will be out on dive boats diving on reefs that are extremely good on days 3 and 4.

I would also.strongly recommend that you just do your OW and some fun diving on your first holiday. You will gain far more from your advanced by leaving a break between it and your OW.

We learned in Egypt too , as did many of our diving friends , and have never looked back since.

Thank you TippyToes. I am now getting really excited about starting my new adventure.
