Most if not all DSC radios will respond to a DSC position request. I've found this handy to find out where a buddy is diving when they aren't on their boat. Will the Nautilus Life Line respond to such a request?

Chuck

Hello Chuck, thank you for your question.

The Lifeline is a DSC sending device only, but we have recently implemented what we call "fleet mode" which allows the Lifeline to accomplish position reports without sending distress messages. We are currently developing our documentation for this mode, but you can check it out on the Lifeline software under the 'Advanced' tab. Here, you will have the option of entering a host MMSI to which the Lifeline will report its position. This is a very useful tool for multiple applications, and has seen some great excitement in the scientific diving community as a method to keep track of everyone without alerting other vessels.

Since the Lifeline is programmed by default to turn off after 5 minutes, a request for position reports would more often than not be left unanswered. This default setting however is what allows the Lifeline to reserve battery power in the unlikely case of a distress situation.

I hope this answers your question, Chuck, and gives some insight as to why the Lifeline is programmed the way that it is. Please let us know if we can offer any further information.
