BugFest-By-The-Sea has upgraded the prizes for the Great Florida Bug Hunt Contest!
The No. 1 prize is $500 and an Atomic Z2 Regulator (total value $950)! Second place is a $700 Sola 1200 dive light. Third place is a Hollis wrist computer and a Sealife Mini II Camera ($530 total value).
The Town of Lauderdale-By-The-Sea, the Shore Dive Capital of South Florida, is sponsoring BugFest-By-The-Sea 2012 in conjunction with local dive shops, hotels and other businesses.
Designed for scuba divers, BugFest is the first mini-season event of its type in Florida.
Unlike Monroe County, divers outside the Keys can bag up to 12 lobsters per day. If you are new to lobster hunting, you can pick up great tips at a seminar taught by expert lobster hunter Jim "Chiefy" Mathie, author of Catching the Bug, The Comprehensive Guide to Catching the Spiny Lobster.
BugFest also features a free dive safety refresher and beach diving clinic, wreck dives, a free pier-reef clean-up sponsored by PADI's Project AWARE, a photo contest with more prizes, a lobster bake and boil, steel-drum music, a lobster chef competition and a PADI Fish ID course.
One of the weeks highlights is a beach dive on the SS Copenhagen, a shipwreck listed on the National Register of Historic Places and one of 11 state underwater archaeological preserves.
To make a boat reservation, call Gold Coast Scuba in Lauderdale-By-The-Sea at 954-616-5909.
