Yes, the black cheek eels do like fingers.

Generally they are found with a few of the pretty little red fish (Anthias) surrounding their hole. Don't put your hand down next to a group of those pretty red fish for sure.

To be fair, they normally do a bit of posturing before coming out to bite. 3 quick lunges before the proper bite is the rule of thumb. Oh and there's often a second one coming out at a different angle which adds to the fun.
 
Definitely lots of eels in the Maldives and many hanging out in groups. Noticeably more aggressive than the Caribbean! We were allowed to wear gloves on Carpe Vita Liveaboard but didn't use them a ton and I love my new hook!
 
In my 7 visits to the Maldives, I've never needed gloves in over 200 dives
