Was thinking about making a trip to Florida to do some shore-entry diving. Anyone have any ideas where the best places are for this? I initial was thinking Pensacola.

Many thanks in advance.
Jeff

I think the best shore diving in FL is at Lauderdale by the Sea. They have 3 reefs within swimming distance from the shore. The nearest two are 75 to 125 yards from the shore.

I am going to move this to the FL forum where you will likely get more response.

What are the currents like at those reefs? Depths?

Dutera (sp) ave in Lauderdale by the Sea! We just did 2 days of diving there new years eve and day. Nice reefs, easy swim, depths average 20 ft, good vis plus front row parking if you get there at the right time.

BHB is equally as easy and interesting.

What they said, but as long as you're in the area, I'd throw in the Seatech Ledge in Dania and the Yellow Brick Road in Hollywood.

This is a really nice meetup group that does a lot of shore diving and is sponosred by Gold Coast Scuba in Lauderdale by the Sea....... Gold Coast Scuba Divers (954) 616-5909 (Fort Lauderdale, FL) - Meetup

I've dove Lauderdale by the Sea a number of times and Seatech Ledges in Dania Beach and enjoy them both. I probably like the Dania Beach site a bit better though it is a longer swim out (at least it seemed to be to me!). Blue Heron Bridge is another nice site: check out the current thread called BHB Trolls

Here's a thread on LBTS you might find interesting..... http://www.scubaboard.com/forums/florida-conch-divers/290550-lauderdale-sea-beach-dive.html

Bilsant and some others have way more experience than me at LBTS and Seatech Ledges, but the times I've dove, the current has been no big deal. Just swim south into it at the start of the dive and head back north on the second half of the dive. But I'd imagine you'd want to look at the conditions from the surface before you dive and determine if conditions look unusual. During the winter, you more likely to have issues with rough surf conditions than the normal northward current. At LBTS, there are bound to be some local divers you can talk to for advice (or stop by Gold Coast Scuba's shop and talk to them while you get air fills or rent tanks).

Thanks sportxlh. I'm sorry Falconfan, I didn't answer the original questions.

Depths for most of these dives will be less than 18 - 20 feet - usually more like 15 or so. Usually the currents are workable, but even when they're ripping, we've parked the cars a half mile or so apart and enjoyed a shore drift dive from south to north, or vice versa...Also, a strong 2nd for Gold Coast Scuba's meetup group. They got me into shore diving in the first place...nice folks, the shop is supportive, and if you're new and speak up, somebody will buddy up with you. They do free shorediving clinics from time to time.

And at BHB you can ride the current one direction, then when it switches at high tide - ride it back to where you started.
