I have been on alot of dives or let me rather say about 80%
of my dives that I have noticed that the fellow divers don't
really know their fish species, corals, turtels ect. . Alot of them
can't eevn say just the families to wich the specie belong to. .
So what is the meaning of diving then? ?

I personally have a program for fish, coral, mamils, sharks ect
species (our local species ) and 5 books aswell. . And when ever
i go diving I take them with me to go through them after the dives. .

How many of your local fish, coral mamil ect species do you know? ?

I just personally feel that the more one know about your diving
surroundings and the area then one can tell the puplic more
or even teach someone something new and then they will be more
aware of the ocean and that will create a bigger awareness that we have
to look after the ocean before it is to late. .

Live to dive and Dive to live. . . . :burnout:

Different people have different interests and those interests change over time. Some people enjoy fish watching, others don't. You are a fish watcher. You ask, "So what is the meaning of diving then?" about people who are not fish watchers. Some of them might think you are a nerd and miss the point of diving. Neither outlook is correct. We enjoy our diving for various reasons. Does it matter which reason a particular diver has if he is enjoying his dives?

Like you, I started out as a fish watcher. Unlike some, I have little interest in blennies anf gobies. I expanded my interests over time. I still fish watch, but not always. I took a hard look at my reasons for diving after the first time I met a blind diver. First I thought, "Why does this person dive?" After lots of reflection, I realized I would want to continue diving if I became blind. I love the feeling of weightlessness. I love the caress of the ocean. I love the peacefull feeling of diving.

There are many approaches to diving. Fish watching is but one.

Enjoy your diving for whatever reason.

How many people enjoying a beautiful meadow can name all the wild flowers, trees & bushes to species & family?

A more in-depth knowledge of what you're seeing can enhance appreciation, but is not required to have appreciation.

Until many dives into a dive career, most divers are quite occupied simply with the act of diving.

I agree with Dr. Rich, I can enjoy a visit to an art museum without knowing who the artist is, or where they're from, or from what period the work was created.

I've been to places where the local divers generally know species of fish, crabs, etc. but very few could identify any of the local shells. I guess we get to know what interests ourselves.

So what you acctually saying Roatanman, that alot of poeple out there
are just diving so that they can brag and say that they can dive? ? If
that is the reason will they not be leathal dive buddies? ?

/sigh
don't be so extreme in your thinking. Not everything is so black and white.

My husband enjoys diving for the challenge, the techie stuff. I enjoy it for the relaxation, the fish and the adventure. We both have fun.

I love to look at the fish when I dive, but I couldn't care less what they're called. A rose by any other name and all that, right?
