the spora-sub instinct star (which i own a pair of) are considered a mask specialized for spear fishing.

If all you were doing was freediving (not hunting) I'd say start with the Aqua Sphera. You pay for the ultra low volume with the wrap-around plastic lenses, which do distort side vision a bit, but on the other hand, it's a wide angle view you wouldn't have with glass.

The biggest sneaky characteristic is that it is biased to upward vision; you can see towards the top of your head more easily than towards your feet. This makes you tilt your head down more if you're working with something at waist level like a gun. It's not annoying but it's there.

For flat glass, try the Sporasub Mystic or the Picasso Deep. Both have nice low volume for getting past 66' easier. I think the Mystic is available in camo, too.

Well here come the flames. I went on a Manatee dive in FL. The LDS had USD low volume wrap around clear silicone masks that were really comfortable and didn't leak at all in spite of my beard. I asked the op. if I could buy one of these great masks from him. He directed me not to his shop but, to the WalMart near his shop. The cost at the time was $15.00 I bought two. One is still untouched in the plastic package. Probably the last masks I'll ever buy.

AfterDark is right. The best mask isn't the coolest or the dearest mask on display at the dive store. It isn't even the mask made to a particular design, or produced for a particular specialism, or manufactured from a particular material. The best mask is the one which fits YOUR OWN FACIAL DIMENSIONS best, not anybody else's, so pick your mask with care and be wary of choosing a mask just because it wins popularity contests. You are the one who has to dive with the mask you eventually buy and if it leaks, you simply haven't invested enough of your own time trying it on for size.

Hi David:

Nominally I would be the first one in line behind you co-signing on this, it is spot on for a scuba mask.

For freediving and breath-hold hunting, though, some other constraints begin to be as important, if not more important.

Perfect fit and leak-proof comfort are indeed the top arbiters for someone with an unlimited air supply on their back. However, the lungs of a freediver will compress small enough at 66' that you will be unable to exhale.

Not being able to exhale means you cannot equalize your ears, or equalize your mask squeeze. This usually leads to a ruptured eardrum as a freediver with good breath-hold ability (but poor "lung air supply management" skills) continues to push deeper, even though they can't clear their ears.

The smaller the mask, the better use you can make of the limited air supply in your lungs. My Sphera mask does not fit "perfectly"; it leaks a small amount because it is a bit too wide for my face, but, I wouldn't consider freediving with my beloved Atomic Frameless because it limits my depth severely.

All the best, James

I don't what else to tell joco. It's a U S Divers clear silicone wrap around mask. They had them in sets with fins and snorkels and seprate in those annoying sealed plastic packages. I've had some very expensive masks down thru the years that fit me well but, always started leaking at some point in time. This one hasn't. Depth isn't an issue unless your using goggles:shocked2:eek:uch eye squezze hurts! If the mask doesn't leak and is comfortable face down at the surface it'll be the same at any depth. Ask me questions I'll see if I can answer them.
