Got a call last night. We're standing by to assist on a possible plane crash in Venice.

Cigami: Time to start downing the red powerade.

Authorities investigate reports of downed plane near Venice

Staff Report
VENICE – Authorities are investigating reports from numerous callers tonight about a downed plane in the Gulf of Mexico in the vicinity of Sharky’s on the Pier.
Waves are reportedly at six to eight feet and hindering the search by the U.S. Coast Guard. Sarasota County Fire Rescue and a helicopter crew from the Sarasota County Sheriff’s Office are assisting.
So far, no wreckage has been found.

Good luck and be careful. Lets hope it's not a downed plane.

But on the lighter side. It could be a UFO. So if they pick you up see if they have access to SB before you go so you can keep in touch. Diving Mars would be cool.

Prayers to you and your team.

Gary D.

Thanks, Gary.

Sarasota County SO will be the lead for underwater operations on this one. We've worked with them several times in the past (most recently in Feb, searching for the daughter of one of our detectives) and they're a good team.

The plane is now being reported as a single engine piper with one person aboard. Our aviation units are already assisting.

On the plus side of things, our team is just putting into service our new 26' cat. We may get to break it in soon.

They located the wreckage last night and recovered the pilot. They're going to be lifting the plane this morning. The plane was located about .5 miles NE of the Pier at Sharky's, very close to a dive site called the boneyard. The wreck is in 25' of water with no vis from the 6'-8' seas yesterday.
