So, I am planning on getting my first Hog setup and feel overwhelmed with the different brands to go with. There just seem to be so many. I have read many topics on here about hogs and BP/W's but still feel overwhelmed with the possibilities. I know for sure I do not want any quick releases creating a potential failure spot. My scuba instructor also agreed on that. I guess I will lay out the brands with links to them and see what everyone thinks. Any pro's/con's/ I have this and I loved it/hated it would be appreciated.

Also, I have thought about buying everything separately. I really liked the Hammerhead plates out there. Any thoughts on buying everything separately and the hammerhead plates? BTW, I want a SS plate.

There's a lot of good equipment out there -- Once you've decided on a BP and Hogarthian harness, and know how much lift you need from a wing, then the decisions come down to wing type (horseshoe vs. doughnut), STA or not, price, and customer service.

I'm a big fan of DSS because of the customer service. A good friend of mine decided to buy a singles rig from them, and Tobin wouldn't sell it to her. Until, that is, she had gathered and provided him with enough information that he was sure she was buying the RIGHT setup for her. I was impressed with that. In addition, the singles rig package from DSS is one of the best values for money, unless you happen to hit some particularly good sale from another manufacturer. I have recommended DSS to a number of friends, and have yet to have anybody dissatisfied.

Oxycheq is my first choice wing too. As far as buying everything separately, that can be a good way to go. It's what I did, and what I will continue to do.

As far as Hammerhead goes, they make a really nice plate, but I personally don't like that the bolts that come with their STA are not attached to the STA itself. It's not a big deal, but I find it easier to setup/break down a BP/W singles rig if the bolts are fixed to the STA.

Sunfire85,
Don't forget Fred T's stuff. I'm in the same boat as you still shoping. But have narrowed it down. Still haven't selected a wing yet. I'd recommend emailing FredT and having him send his gearlist to you. You'd be surprised at the cost savings.

I am unaware of who FredT is. I apologize if I am supposed to know...
Also, I want a doubles rig for sure, so no single rigs, and can someone tell me the pro's and con's or difference between the horseshoe vs. doughnut? I am aware of the different shape but beyond that don't know much about the two.....

There are quite a few choices in plates, I dive a Halcyon and I still like my DR Transpac, don't care what anyone says about failure points. Wings are another story, I'd recomend either a DR or if you want something really streamlined go with the Oxy.

Also Golemgear runs specials from time to time. From the feedback it is quality gear.
