I have one that I use as a backup and I noticed bubbles coming from the 1st stage out of a rubber plug along the side,at 1st glance it looks like one of the threaded plugs but its actually a rubber plug and the hole has no threads. anyone know its purpose?? the reg only has 10 dives since its last service.

The rubber plug is a actually a check valve. The bubbles you see are the result of Sherwood's dry bleed system. Rather than try to seal the spring chamber with seals, oils, greases and other means the regulator introduces a tiny amount of air to the chamber and lets the positive pressure escape. It's all perfectly normal and will only cost you a couple of breaths through the whole dive.

If it stops fizzing be sure to have it checked.

Pete

Anti-freeze air bleed, probably -- a normal Sherwood design.

Are you talking about the little black tab shown in the link above? It's supposed to release air (bubble), the net air used up is small.

Pete beat me to it.
(The link is to a different second stage, but it has a good picture of the first stage's black tab that bubbles.)
