A buddy and I are planning a week long shore diving adventure the last week in september. We are planning on doing atleast one dive in each state, we are planning on making cape ann our home base. I wanted to find out the must do shore dives in cape ann and north shore and if there are any good bottle dives, because we both love looking for other people's trash. Also if anybody could recommend dive shops in the area, what water temps are going to be like, and somewhere I would be able to get tidal charts for the area. We are also going to drive up to portland one day and dive sites there and new hampshire so any suggestions in those areas would be much appreciated too. Thanks in advance for any help.

If you dive in CT there are only two places that I recommend. Stonington Beach, only available after 5 pm or early morning. Also the Portland Quarry is great if you like bottles and trash. In fact they found a bottle from Portland ME in the Portland Quarry in CT...there are many odd things downthere.

Three places around Portland are as follows:

Ft Williams Park:

Two Lights ( Note not in the state park ):

Not a great image, but note the cove at the end of two lights road

Kettle Cove (Very close to Two Lights):

Again, not a great image. Kettle Cove is the closest one to the long beach, Cresent Beach.

Nubble Light in York, ME is close to Cape Ann. There are a couple of shore dive sites in Rye, NH as well. With some planning you could dive Maine and NH in the same day.

This book by my buddy Jerry Shine is the most comprehensive shore diving guide covering all of New England.

I actually went to a lecture he gave at beneath the sea this year. that is one of the reasons we planned this trip. I do love the book also, it did give me a good starting point in the planning.

In Maine Nubble light is the most mentioned site in general and serveral distinctly different dives can be enjoyed there.

The Cape Elizabeth Sites CFELLIOT mentioned are notable in that they are close to the 2 Portland Dive shops. I'd go for Ships Cove, 2 Lights and Kettle Cove, in that order. Ships Cove is good for a pair of very nice left and right dives. 2 Lights is best avoided at a low tide. I'm at Kettle tonight.

For my taste the hidden jewel in southern Maine is St. Ann's Beach in Kennebunkport. 2 great dives can be had here and while best at high tide it can be enjoyed throughout the cycle.

In my experience, the best bottle hunting around is under the Sarah Long bridge in Portsmouth, NH. It's the one you see to the right as you cross the bridge into Maine on I-95.

I third this book! Perhaps one of the most comprehensive shore diving guides EVER done for an area as large as New England. I was at the Beneath the Sea talk too! Jerry just emailed me to let me know that my Lion Fish shot from the Beach 8th street shore dive in Queens will be his "shot of the week" next week on www.bluespherepubs.com! Funny, I have four commercials running right now on TV and I get more excited about being on his web page, lol. His web page is starting to turn into a nice little resource for NE diving news and information. Good job Jerry and all envolved!
