I've heard a few good things about this island and its diving. Has anyone been there (recently)? What's been your experience/opinion?

Hi,
There have been a copuple of threads about this recently. Opinion seems to be split. Some people love it and other people did not like it.

Personally I love it I have been diving there twicve and I had a great time both trips.
Most recently I was there in November 2004. I did 12 dives over 6 days and I enjoyed each one. Turtles, sea horses, eagle rays loads of fish. Some of the dives were near vertical walls, some were pinnacles, some were flatish coral gradens.
The hiking is also very good in Dominica. However its not a very developed island, no big resorts casinos etc.

I'm heading there on the 13th. I can let you know when I get back. Our friend is there and that is who we are visiting, and he tells us the diving is great and specially now that there is alot more than usual marine life. We'll be there for 10 days..diving, kayaking, hiking etc. I'll do a trip report when I get back.

Did you go on that trip? How was it?

How far generally are the sites from the shore in Dominica?

How's the atmosphere on the island?

How easy is it to get there from the US? DIrect flights from Miami?

Yes, I went on the trip and it was great..had tons of fun..diving and topside also. We stayed in Portsmith with a friend that attends Ross U there he rents a house so we stayed with him. We used Cabrits Dive Center there in which he is a dive master there and we dove with them, they are pretty good operating. The sites are pretty close by....the diving was really good. on one weekend we went to Scott's Head and stayed there for the weekend...we stayed at Anchorage Hotel/Dive Centre and they are also a great operator. it's really beautiful there. I'ts a very poor island...but, it's really nice you can do lot's of hiking if you like. We did the Boiling Lake...which is an 8 hr. hike to a volcano..boy, that was a hike. We flew from Boston to St. Maarten and stayed there overnight, then in the morning we flew to Dominica. I highly recommend it. We are heading there again in Feb. before he leaves to come back to the States.

ok, bumping the thread to see if anyone else has experience in Dominica.

Anyone stayed at any resorts there? Any more input on the diving there?

We were there in March 2005
You can download a trip report and slideshow at

When we got back, we booked again for March 2006.
We never do this.
We are doing everything exactly the same way.

It is the best diving we have done in comparison to other dive destinations we have visited (e.g., the North and East End of Grand Cayman, Little Cayman, the Bahamas, Belize (Lighthouse Atoll), Bonaire, Cozumel, the Kona coast of Hawaii, Utila and Roatan).

If you going on the diving alone, you need to be on the South End of the island.

The word I've gotten from a photo bug here in NYC who I respect is that Dominica has perhaps the best bio-diversity at the macro level of any island in the Carib. There is also some great pelagic activity at certain times of the year, but it's a bit too far out into the deep blue for the dive ops. The land activities are supposed to be gorgeous (but hire a guide).
