First, I'm not sure for how long exact the MK20UL was offered. I think it started in 1997, but I'm travelling, so can't check my catalogs. It might have been earlier that it came on the market, if nobody else can help, I will let you know after the 22.09. when I'm home again.
In 2002 the MK25 was launched, so the MK20 and also the MK20 UL was obsolete.
In that year there was also a MK25UL on the market, but it was sold only in the US and only 2002.
No other SP models than the MK18UL-MK20Ul and the MK25UL have been offered as UL models a.f.a.i.k.

On your pics it is, I think, quite easy to see, that one MK20 turret is the new style, while the other is the classic MK20 style.
I'm not sure which one for you is the greyish one and which one the matte one, but I guess the one with the new turret style is the one you call matte......
Anyway, it's not difficult to identify the older models from the newer ones.
If the S/N starts with 3.. to 8... (1993-1998), you have for sure and old model.
The newer turret style can be found from S/N 9.... to 02..... (1999-2002 production year) and with it the newer coating...
I think Mono is right that the new turret was implemented in 2000.....
BTW, when checking in the Bay for 2nd hand MK20s, the turret or the darker coating also helps to identify if it probably has already the Composite Piston, or if it might still have the Brass Tip Piston or steel Tip Piston.....

How about silver tip pistons?
I’ve always assumed this is Alu as well (and seems to be the same as the bronze tipped ones)

I couldn't say right now, I think I have one of those, but I thought it must be brass, because it has the same piston tip shape.
Didn't cross my mind that SP could have used AL for their piston tips, but I think I remember that it is very light...
Will check when I'm back home......
Thanks for showing.....

Thanks for all these details.
The one I call "matte" is indeed the one on the right with the top protection.
Good info about the turret differenciation.
Thanks to everybody :)
