I just got a Shearwater Perdix 2. Main considerations for this over the Peregrine was the user replaceable battery and tracking SfGF and GF99. I am getting ready to make my first dives with it and am considering using OC tec mode on a NC wreck trip. Decom is not planned or expected.... But I like being able to configure the center row with GF information. Old eyes and all that.
I realize that the computer will NOT "tell" me to perform a safety stop or track the length of it. I will make the stop and use GF information to "fine tune" per Andy Davis's article on the subject.
So my question is... Am I missing something? Is there a reason NOT to do this.... and to use rec mode instead?
TIA for any insight you can give me.

This is why I have a Perdix. I am a recreational diver but I use the OC Tec mode as I can have what I want on screen. Occasionality I will do some back gas deco dives and the Perdix is perfect for that.
Plus of course the digital screen which you can choose colours.

You setup your DC how you want it, use what GF settings you want and go enjoy your dives. I love the shearwater as it is not a babysitter. I also turned off the low NDL setting I don't need it. Yes for safety stop your time will count up. Have had some guides wondering why as their DC's count down lol

Just a point of clarification. You absolutely can display both SurfGF and GF99 on a Peregrine.

I have a Perdix AI, and my daughters have Peregrine TXs. For familiarity, I have them setup the same. Rec mode (obviously, as they are Peregrines). Bottom row has T1 Pressure in center and right side has a mini display with SurfGF, GTR, and GF99.

Battery is only user replaceable on the Perdix, though.

I have a Perdix (no air integration) and use it in rec mode. You can configure the display to show GF99 and SurfGF on the bottom row. I prefer rec mode as the safety stop is controlled automatically. I've used the OC tec mode and found I had to start and stop a timer manually when I began my safety stop. Since you're using GF's to control the safety stops you don't need the timer. I have the VPM-B algorithm and use it occasionally which requires using the OC tec mode. Since I dive using safety stops the simplicity of rec mode works best for me.

I have a Perdix 2 and when rec diving I use Nitrox mode set up to display SfGF and GF99. I only use OC Tec mode for tech diving because the screen looks cluttered with too much irrelevant information like deco, TTS etc.. The Perdix has the benefit that rec modes and tech modes can store 2 different presets e.g. in rec modes it's set to GF 60/95 and in tech mode set to GF 50/80.

I bought my wife a Peregrine. It's also set so SfGF and GF99 are displayed for all modes. It's marketed as a rec DC but completely competent as a tech DC in 3 GasNX mode at AN/DP level. I borrow it as my backup DC for tech dives.

I exclusively use OC Tec because I want the same information in the same locations for all dives.
^100% this. The only downside I could think of is that OC Tec Mode gives you much more information that could be overwhelming to someone who just wants to track Bottom time, Depth, and to remind them how long they should safety stop
