Well thanks everyone for your contributions - I love the depth of knowledge around here. In the end we decide to hedge our bets and go to Playa, mostly for the sake of logistics. It is easy to get to from here, and gives us access to both reefs and cenotes. If the weather craps out, it seems...
Thanks for taking the time:) Yes, I've been to Cozumel and loved the drift diving. Knowing the lay of the land there makes planning a little bit easier, but as you say it's also nice to broaden horizons. Roatan is intriguing. Did you have to jump through many hurdles to get there? Or back!
So far Egypt, Thailand, Florida, Cozumel for vacations with a smattering of days in other random places:
Egypt- Likes- where I learned and probably still the most spectacular and colorful reef life. Falafel. Dislikes - not crazy about Islamic countries and the Middle East.

Oh cool. Had my first up close and personal with a grouper diving the Circle of Heroes out of tarpon Springs a couple of months ago. Turned a corner and there he was right in front of me. Not sure who jumped more! PCB?
