Recommended shop in Calgary for two newbies to get their certification?

Hello, we have some close friends in Calgary who are interested in getting certified. The plan would be to have them do their classroom and pool work locally, then do their open water and final cert stuff on a trip to the Caribbean. Most dive operations we've used on the islands offer this so it...

    Sealife 3.0?

Agreed, the effect will be small. The important point is the internal pressure will remain neutral or increase. It will not decrease at depth, as was suggested earlier in this thread. Agreed again. This is why I said "I wouldn't say the enclosure is at a relative vacuum at depth" earlier...

    Sealife 3.0?

True, but with the phone in a sealed case the change of pressure the phone would experience would be modest. The seal will compress, and the (plastic?) walls will go concave slightly, but the percentage of volume reduction would still be very small and the resulting increase in pressure likewise...

    Sealife 3.0?

Good point about pressurization reducing the o-ring seal. However, I wouldn't say the enclosure is at a relative vacuum at depth. Whatever internal pressure it has at the surface will increase as depth increases. The external pressure will act upon the enclosure, seeking to compress its walls...

    Sealife 3.0?

They should have you pressurize the case, not draw a vacuum. The idea is to keep water OUT. The seal and sensor can work with a delta in either direction... why not use the one that actually promotes the desired behavior?

    Sealife 3.0?

I took the time to investigate the SportDiver case. It's a clever approach, I'll give them that. Having integrated electronics allows them to incorporate leak detectors, etc. One thing I'd have considered is to also add a pressure sensor... if the case developed a leak you'd know about it even...

    Sealife 3.0?

How do you change settings while underwater? Does the housing have hardware and firmware integrated into it?

    Sealife 3.0?

Huh? The zoom factor is within the iPhone. How can a simple external case impose a limit on that?

    Sealife 3.0?

I thought I'd worked it out when I asked for the Micro. So with the TG-6 I'm hopeful but keeping an open mind.

    Sealife 3.0?

Thanks again to everyone who replied on this thread! I spent last night experimenting with the Micro some more. Bottom line for me: It's great at what it does - but what it does well is not why I bought it. Its field of view is just too wide for my style of underwater photography, and the...

    Sealife 3.0?

Been reading a lot about the TG-6 today. I really appreciate everyone's comments. A couple more questions: * TG-6 battery life? The Micro has seemingly infinite battery life. I took it on a one hour dive, and two lengthy snorkel sessions, and the battery indicator never came off 100%. The...

    Sealife 3.0?

Yeah, I've noticed that same thing (cellphones in housings yielding great photos). I feel like I should snicker and make fun of people who do that, but I can't argue with the results! Maybe I need to design a USB dongle that plugs into a cellphone and connects to external strobes....

    Sealife 3.0?

This is excellent information, thank you. I don't presently have camera lights and (today!) don't know that I'll get that serious about photography. Right now I just want something that's fast and easy to get close up shots, with the camera on a tether so I can simply let go if it's not in use...

    Sealife 3.0?

I would agree, but in one reviewer's writeup they were specifically comparing the Micro to the TG-6, as entry-level scuba cameras, and they claimed the TG-6 was inferior to the Micro in the ways I mentioned. I will admit I'm slightly biased toward low-light performance at the moment, coming off...

    Sealife 3.0?

Yep, I've noticed the TG-6 and wondered about it. When you say 25-100mm "equivalent", is that "digital" zoom? Basically trading resolution for magnification? 15 feet was my max distance, figuring that allowed me to get the rare group shot or (say) include the entire manta in the photo. Most of...
