Tiger Cowrie in a cave in the shallows. Tiger Cowries are the largest of the many species of cowries found in Hawaii. Not only that, those in Hawaii grow larger. In Hawaii, Tiger Cowries can grow to nearly 6 in. Elsewhere, they rarely grow bigger than 4 in. This one is about 4 in. Inside the shell is a snail and are a favorite food of Octopus. Traditional Hawaiian fishermen make lures from Tiger Cowrie shells to attract Tako (Octopus).
