So consider me ignorant. You expect viz to be 6-12", but will quit if it's less than 10'? I'm not understanding.
Ohh you said it Perfectly..... It has nothing to do with 10 inches, 10 feet or 100 feet. Like @Rob9876 clearly stated "Consistent" so he doesn't waste his time. To me that means no Surprises 80% of the time for the conditions I'm Expecting.

No worries, didn't take it that way, I know that "good viz" can vary by circumstance and just wanted to clarify my frame for the question.

My problem now is that after diving in Jupiter my son/dive buddy wants to drive the extra 8 hours round-trip each time rather than go back to PCB. Makes for a tiring weekend/long-weekend of driving!

Just remember that those trips will be some of the best of your life and one day you'll be wishing you could go back in time and be in the car with him. How old is your son? Maybe he can drive 1/2?

I got it now, lol!

I guess when I dive I expect to get blown out.... so if I get wet it was a pretty good day.

No doubt, I definitely cherish the opportunity to take dive trips with him. He's 16 and does help with the driving now. But our choice is 16 hours round trip to dive PCB versus 24 hours round trip to dive Jupiter -- that's for a weekend or long-weekend (for a longer trip we'd usually fly, but for a weekend the no-fly time is an issue). 24 hours of car travel on a weekend makes for a long Monday at work!

I have it worked out that if I want to take off for a few days I can work a few Sat beforehand to even things out. With that said if this were me I'd take less trips but stay longer to be able to get the same amount of dives in for less driving overall.

Using fake numbers;

If you do 4 dives in a weekend either place (over 2 days), you could do 8 dives in Jupiter over 4 days and just make the drive 1/2 as much. Now you're driving 4hrs / dive @ 16hr drive, but if you did twice as many dives over ~ 4 days then it would only be 3hrs driving / dive @ 24hrs in Jupiter. You'd just have to plug in whatever numbers work for you....

Also, I could justify and rationalize myself into just about anything... so maybe I'm not the best source of advice:D

Back when I was primarily a wreck diver (Great Lakes and NC), I fully expected to lose 1/4 to 1/3rd of my dives due to being blown out. I once drove from Indiana to NC with buddies for a planned 4-day dive trip. We were blown out all 4 days. We drove back home with gear that never got wet. It happens.

Now that I'm a Floridian I'm definitely spoiled. 3-days before any of my planned weekend trips to the coast I'll check the conditions. If they are looking too questionable I will cancel the charters more often than not. Spoiled for sure!

I've only been out of NJ a handful of times. I figure if I sign up once a month and get out 40%-50% of the time that'll be 5 or 6 trips a year. I'm heading out 11/13 and 12/05, weather permitting of course. I don't mind getting blown out of NJ, it just means that my day doesn't have to start @ 1am to get there.

We tried NC last year for 2 days, got blown out offshore both days but made it inshore on day 2. Made the best of it, dove a quarry that was ~ 2hrs inland and ate some great food.

Edit: do the charter's in FL let you cancel that soon to the day?

Most charters have a 48-hrs cancelation policy. The only exception is around major holidays. Some of the charters enforce a 7-day cancelation policy around Christmas and I think a few other holidays.

That is why I typically make the final call 3 days before.

I've never even thought to look into the cancellation policy, I thought it was 30 days but I could be totally wrong. If she's going, I guess I'm going. Here's a video shot from the other day in the rain (I wasn't on);

Oh our conditions can get rocking! Depending up which inlet a boat uses, many of the boats will go out in 3-5' or maybe even 4-6' seas (depending upon the period, tide, direction, etc.) if they know the people on the boat can handle it. That is one reason I check first. If the conditions are more than I feel like tackling, I'll cancel because the boat may not.
