In short, the suit looks after itself.

Pretty much this.
I never touch my shoulder dump during a dive*. Just a left-arm chicken wing when I need to vent it.

* Except closing it down if I feel like laying on my back in a cushion of air sunning on the surface waiting for the boat to arrive

In my neo suit I have to inflate the suit at the surface and stretch out to get it to "set" right. Otherwise I feel scrunched in the suit during the dive. So my valve is closed at the surface and then opened for the rest of the dive.

Does anyone else do this? It's possible I'm a hair big for my suit, but after I do this it dives like a dream. If I keep the suit on I don't have to do this for the 2nd dive.

Mine is usually open all the way but I’ll close it down a little if the situation calls for it, like rolling while taking pictures of SeaLions.

Okay, thanks for the input, I will try to put it fully open and go in the pool with it down to 8 ft.

Neoprene drysuits are generally a 'snugger' fit and stretch, when compared with a membrane suit.

I remember having to blow in some air to give some wriggle room on the surface to get everything in place. Dive membrane now, much better for trim and buoyancy control.

The best thing you can do is practice. Everyone has given their input so you have a general direction, but nothing beats experience. Dive 5 in a ds will still feel weird, but dive 20 will feel way better. By dive 50 you'll have forgotten all about this thread.

Good luck!

To add it's ascents which need a bit of practice. When you're moving up quickly you need to know how to dump from the suit and wing/BCD so that you are fully in control of the ascent.

When practicing the tuck and roll from feet up position are you supposed to close the valve tp prevent water getting in?

Water should not get in regardless of position or setting.
