Can you cite an ordinary example where it needs to be QR?

Any time a diver is on their necklace. Diver A breathing from their necklace during backgas deco or safety stop and Diver B goes out of gas.

Understand, they wont last that long. I use those for snorkel keepers, and they fail regularly. At best they lose elasticity, worst, they just break. not a huge deal on a snorkel, but a pain on a long hose or spg. Use cave line.

still don't see it needing to be QR......

IMHO, a bolt snap should be operable easily, and second nature or it is (1) wrong size, (2) skill problem.

Interesting scenario though, and makes me think some more... :thumb:

Looks great for an SPG, but shouldn't primaries be quick release?

The goody and skunkee brands shown in the video are super easy to break at the point where it's glued together. When putting those things in my daughter's hair they would frequently break. Can't speak to the "terra ties" that they also showed in the vid as I've never seen those.

Just a point of education as this is the Basic forum. The bolt snap secured with cave line was never intended to function as a quick release fastener. It’s function as a non metal to metal is to secure dive gear to your harness. When an entrapment or entanglement occurs, the connection can be cut free. Hope this helps with the concept.

These things are silicon and last forever. They are not elastics or rubber bands or bungees.
Scunci makes lots of different kinds of hair bands; you want the silicon-gel ones. Amazon has them: https://www.amazon.com/Scunci-28pk-Noslp-Evolution-Elastics. They come in multiple colors. They are about 3 inches unstretched, easily stretch to 8 inches. I use them for color-coding things, snap-bolt ties, holding slates together, a little elasticity in my camera arms, etc. $5.80 for 28 of them, Prime. I just buy mine at CVS.

I agree that it shouldn't be a problem to unsnap a bolt snap, and wrong size is the most common issue I see with it.

On the other hand,I also know that unlocking my front door isn't a problem. But I still sometimes drop my keys while trying to do it when I really have to pee.

Unsnapping a snap under duress may not go quite as smoothly as you hope. The OOG diver can always just breathe off of the reg while it's still snapped too. All of that just complicates matters in a time when you want the least complication possible! Particularly when it is easy to make it QR, and having that ability makes zero difference to regular use.

Why is a diver on their necklace if they are not donating gas? Primary regulator is for breathing.

The traditional way to attach Bolt Snaps to your Scuba gear is by using a cave line (the lines in the spool used by advanced and technical divers). This is good but an alternative and faster way is by using elastic Hair Ties - the Goody (TM) kind. Here’s a short video on how it’s done. Another Scuba Easy Fix from GoDivePH.

I hope this was helpful. Thumbs if you like the video, Subs if you love it and Click the Bell to get notified when I release new videos.

Hello Macan,

It's a nice/inexpensive/easily obtained variant. Also if you're inclined to ''color code'' components, the colored silicon type give you a quick verification glance.

I use these, see photos, strong/very durable/will break away.

My tec instructor taught me to use ''O'' rings, which I did for a long time, until these became available from DGX.

I usually include a few when I place an order. They are more expensive than they used to be, like everything else.

Rose.

And a necklace reg is for looking like a cool Tek Diver?

I use my backup during safety stops to make sure it works beyond a few quick breaths during an s-drill at the beginning of a dive, to make sure that the necklace isn't too tight for wearing for more than 10 seconds, to make sure that the zip tie on the mouth piece isn't stabbing me in the lip the whole time, to make sure that cockroaches haven't eaten away at the diaphragm causing it to breath wet.

You know... verify it will actually function as well as your primary when you need it. How else do you do all of that if you never breathe off of it?
