I'm a Fish!
Here is yet more sad news, from the Carmel area -- yet another drowning death at one of the premiere diving spots on the California Central Coast. Apparently, it was a swimmer this time around, attempting to rescue a family member, on a small float.

Cal Fire releases new details on drowning at Carmel Beach

Why this continues to happen with some regularity, is beyond me. The current signage at Carmel River State Beach (aka Monastery and Mortuary) almost ensures imminent death on the dry sand. It also happens to be a favorite dive spot, where you can be in a thousand of meters of water, just offshore, where a finger of the Monterey Canyon almost reaches the beach . . .

they put in a lifeguard tower at south this year, although I think it was only manned between memorial day and labor day

Why is it beyond you? Why do you think it continues?

Oh, I don't know; perhaps it's just the oh, so subtle cues . . .

Its far from unique to northern CA... I'm from the east coast of England, where we often get very similar drownings... And that's in the North Sea, a place with a reputation for being cold and rough and dangerous. Heck, the waterways were I grew up have almost annual drownings of drunk tourists who come up from London and think that a small boat on a shallow river has no risks.

There's an awful lot that people don't know... Sometimes that kills them. And sadly I don't think there's a lot we can do about that.

Although, with the number of divers and other water users in Monterrey Bay, I'm surprised I've never seen a coastguard RIB.

I am from CA; have been in the North Sea; and I'll go out on a limb and suggest that more people in the UK are perhaps capable of swimming; or, at least, that the English literacy rates, outstrip this area of Northern California . . .

The coasties have a definite presence; and I've been at that very beach when they've been searching for someone, usually on the business end of too many Modelos . . .

That's a lot of signage. However, those of us who've never been there wouldn't know.

Yes, but there have been any number of SB threads dealing with tragedies there . . .

The signs aren't obvious enough...maybe blur them out and put a hidden picture warning like they do on FB.

Probably none of them have signs like that.

I'm truly sorry I asked for clarification here. Please forgive my ignorance of what that beach is like and having the temerity to ask you why you posted what you did. I'll unsubscribe from this thread for you now.
