Shearwater's Perdix AI vs. All Comers

Out of all of them the Perdix (IMO) has the worst UI. I was also particularly infuriated (and still am) that in Rec mode (for me the best layout with all the relevant info) it has a max depth limit (default to 40m max to 50m) and artificially limits the gas MOD - so yes even Perdix has "Nanny modes"

I am not at home till Friday to check, but as I recall the max depth and gas MOD can both be changed in Rec mode. Though the settings for those are deep in the advanced section.
Try updating your firmware and digging around in settings.

Yes it can be changed, also if you go into tec mode it can be changed. The default out of the box is OC rec mode. If you go into tec mode you can change conservatism as well. The current GF factor is 40/85 and can be raised or lowered. Also the the default in ppo is 1.4 and can be raised or lowered as well.

If your diving just Recreationally the default settings should be fine. However the computer can be adjusted to your personal skill set.

I have a Perdix AI and I agree it is a great computer but I can see at least 2 negatives (at least for me).

1) It is large and black which means it absorbs a lot of heat in the Sun. If you dive on a hot day in cool water it can take up to 10 minutes to display/record the correct temperature.

2) If you dive with two tanks, it doesn't display SAC or GTR for the second transmitter. If it can display it for the first, so there's no reason it can't for the second. They just choose not to.

According to a post by Shearwater the GTR is an afterthought and not considered an important aspect of AI, the main benefit being the tank pressure display in the computer. This was the main reason I did not choose it.

Is Shearwater the best dive computer? Yes. Would I ever buy another Suunto? Not in this lifetime. If on a budget, get a Deep6.

I must be an outlier and have never had issues, over thousands of dives, with Suunto, save for an issue with fouled wet terminals on one occasion, which was on me; and have had them, air-integrated models and not, since they were distributed through SeaQuest, back in the early nineties. The depth sensors have all jibed with my analogue gauges. No problem there. I still carry a Solution as a secondary, some twenty-seven years later.

The "best" computer simply and safely satisfies a given diver's needs, whether it is a 200.00 Mares wrist model or a sophisticated, nine gas 2K brick. Most of the commercial guys that I know, use very typical brands and don't give a whit about any brand loyalty. None if this has to be or should a pissing contest . . .

Sorry to butt in, but I'm curious. Is it a desire of yours to burn calories during a dive or do you want that metric to see how much you happen to burn?
