Hubby has an old iPad and with his birthday and Christmas coming, it’s time to get a new iPad. However, our biggest challenge is ease of downloading and editing videos from our TG4 onto an iPad. Since we travel a lot and use the iPad to watch videos, we really don’t want a heavy laptop. Any recommendations on what I should get him?

There are cables you can pick up for the ipad which will allow you to connect up the camera directly to it or to plug in the SD card from it to download the pics to the ipad directly

I have the iPad Pro (2016) and use the Apple lightning to SD card camera reader (about $28), which supports RAW and JPEG, to download pics/videos. Not sure about your camera model and it's features but maybe you can wirelessly download pics/videos directly from camera to the iPad. I also do that sometimes with the Sealife 2000 camera.

I also use a card reader , cheap to buy and quick and easy !

We have tried transferring via Bluetooth and the cords but it was very slow! Is the SD card reader as fast on the iPad as a pc? Also, what apps do you use to edit? We have the GoPro and the TG4. Thanks all!

with newer ipads it should be as quick as the PC. With teh older ipads it will be slower as the old ones use USB2 VS USB3 on the new ipads. Also the ipad dapter used has to be one of the newer USB3 adapters not the older style

Is the SD card reader as fast on the iPad

Just went to the Apple Store today and guess what? The ports are changing (or did change) to USB-C while I wasn't watching! Was looking at laptops. but newer iPad Pros are the same, and certain models will only use the USB-C ports/cable which transfer both (more) power and information. That means new adapters, in some cases, if you have devices with other types of USB plug ins that you want to connect together. Transfer speeds might be faster through USB-C and you may be able to connect directly to some newer devices such as cameras and whatever Apple products there are, like external hard drives.

I have more research to do!!!!

yes the new ipad pros have a USB C port on them instead of lightning at this point they are the only ipads/iphones that have this. Speed is still usb3 so no real difference for transfer speeds. However it will allow you to connect your camera directly to your ipad now wtihout the use of a lightning adapter just a usb cable

I was faced with a similar dilemma recently. I had a 1st gen iPad mini that just wasn't cutting it as a photo editor. I also didn't want a big, bulky laptop. I found that the best compromise for me was to watch the Apple refurb page and see what popped up on it. Eventually, a refurbished 13.3" MacBook Air with a dual-core i7 processor. It was the previous generation MacBook Air (they were just updated a couple weeks ago), but I was OK with that because it had a built it card reader. It was also a HUGE upgrade from my iPAD Mini and not much bigger than a current "full size" iPad.

The thing that I like about refurbs is that before they release them for sale, typically each one is individually tested to ensure that it meets factory spec. Given that a MacBook Air has a 13.3 inch screen, and you can get an iPad Pro with a 12.9 inch screen, it is not that big of a jump to go with a MacBook Air.
