....thought about it after the trip and wondered if anyone uses just the sliding d ring....no stationary d ring at all....respect to the OP.....hopefully I haven't hijacked the thread....
I use only the sliding rings for aluminium tanks. Yet, I do have stationary rings lurking “above” the sliding ones. I use these for steels and for stages.

On my sidemount harness I've got sliding d-rings for Al80's, and I use the stock fixed drop d-rings for steels. I sidemount bailouts when I'm diving a rebreather, and I just use the regular waist d-rings. If I'm bailed out, the trim of my bailouts is of little concern, and I'm probably dealing with more pressing matters. Since it's not an issue unless they get used, not having sliding d-rings isn't an issue, and they just get clipped off to the buttplate on the harness.

Weights on tanks is one thing in open water, but in sidemount passages it's a bad idea. There's no reason to need them on tanks, but I wouldn't get uppity on someone for having them in open water. If you plan on taking them into a cave, I'd have an issue, more so because it demonstrates a lack of proper training given the environment. It just makes you wonder what else is going on.

@JohnnyC
What rig do you use?
And by drop d ring do you mean the door handles at the back where reels and the butt pouch attaches?

xDeep Stealth. It comes with drop d-rings attached to the waistband by the spine. It IS NOT a buttplate, although xDeep offers one

Ok same rig than me. That’s what I though you meant. So those work well with steel?
I’ve only dove mine with al so far

I went to steel lol. My issue was diving a dry suit with under garments. It just wasn't working. Got with my instructor who helped me resetup my rig. I'll let you know how the pool session goes

Just went through this exercise and ended up adding these: Titanium Sliding D-Ring for sliding rings. They were a little tight on the harness strap so I had to open them up a bit but they seem to slide fine with AL80s now.

While the forward D rings on my rig don't slide, I can't see the need.
Once a tank starts to become positive, switching to forward rings solves the problem.
No need for further adjustments...

Cheers, Kevin

As for me, sliding the rings is easier than re-clipping them.
