I couldn't wait any longer. I went to Monterey sunday, rented some gear and did a "get my feet wet again" dive at breakwater. IT FELT GREAT!!! conditions were nice and visiblity wasn't too bad, once i got out a little way. it took me a couple minuets to get comfortable again but before i knew it i felt right at home, like reuniting with an old friend and picking up right where we left off. saw lots of life even got to play with a seal for a little bit.
Of course no first dive after that long could go completely smooth, right??? i was staying right around the 30 to 45 foot range just checking out critters in the rock. I had been down for maybe 45mins or so when the battery die on the computer so i lost my depth gauge, not a big deal because i wasnt going any deeper and was about to start slowly heading in. Then the part that pissed me off, the high pressure hose started leaking intermititly where it goes into gauge, so i headed in.
All in all it was a great day i was happy with the way i handled every thing, never paniced or got stressed, just adjusted did what i needed to do. Still ended up getting an hour of underwater time and even with the leak i finished with 1000lbs in the AL100 i was using.
I can't wait to get out and some more diving. my wife is getting certified in April and we already have a few trips planed. After what happened with that rental gear i think getting our own full kit has become more of a priority.

Happy Diving everyone

good for you for getting back in .....+ 1 for doing a refresher or diving with an instructor a couple of times ......

I am signed up to go through class with my wife in april. I know it wasn't the smartest move, I just couldn't wait anymore. Also, i just relized the title of my post is a bit missleading. I have spent the last 25 years doing quite a bit of snorkeling so i am familiar with the area, reading conditions, and swimming in cold water. Which is way i chose the spot i did and kept it simple. I figured i would catch some flack from some of you and that's ok.

I DO NOT RECOMEND ANYONE TRY WHAT I DID. Get a refresher and/or go out with an instructor.

Welcome back! Snorkeling solves several scuba skills problems. I almost wish it were a requirement for the OW course. I started diving 13 years ago at age 51. Will I even make it to the 25 years you didn't dive???

Congrats and welcome back. I was out for 12 years. Got back in 2009 with my young children getting certified. Wife was already certified. We are on our tenth year of family dive trips. Its has been wonderful. Hope the same for you.

Wonderful. Welcome back underwater. Good to be home isn't it!

Glad you remembered what you needed to know and the dive went well.

Feel free to keep us updated, we love to hear about diving.

Regards,
Cameron

Thank you
It was amazing to be home. Every time I went snorkeling I would think about SCUBA and wish I could stay down longer that a couple minutes.
It might have helped that I have been reading my wife's NUAI book... And I retain things pretty good

Shoot, diving keeps you young. Nothing like the sea to revitalize you. I couldn't believe how much better I felt after my dive. You have plenty of good years ahead of you I'm sure

That is great. I can't wait to get my kids certified so they can dive with me. I started diving when I was 15 with my Dad, stopped when I was 17, life happens. Now at 42 I'm back at it. The best part isy sister brought me my Dad's Dive log so I was able to re-record my old dives, he was my dive buddy and passed 20 years ago. Now I have taken over his old log to continue the journey. Some of my fondest memories are of diving with my Dad. l'm sure your kids will feel the same.

Happy, and safe, Diving to all.
