Darcy is a well respected business insider. He previously owned Beauchat Canada, owned a dive shop in Montreal for 15 years, Managed Holiday Diver, the parent company of Diver's Direct, a chain of 6 stores in South Florida, and is a past board member of DEMA. BDI is his scuba store consulting business.

It has always been a corporation and functioned like a corporation in the years (12) that I have known of PADI. It was a business and most businesses have some form of corporation.

The short answer: Work in progress. BODI (pronounced "buddy" like in "Your Business Buddy")... Project of a book & training program: Scubanomics.

Main focus of the project is on the lack of business training (customer service, sales, eCommerce management, quality assurance, etc) for dive shop owners who are usually dive instructors investing (sort of!) in the dive industry because they love it, without a serious business plan.

My personal obsession is on the lack of consistency in the quality of the experience under any brand name in the dive industry.

I am happily out of the business, after succeeding (if succeeding in diving means I took a salary for 20 years, ended up with my investment making money, and never getting sued for someone elses mistake) in the dive industry for 20 years. I like to stay current though, and I watch you carefully.

What I've found in the business of diving is that it isn't run as a business except at the very top, where the manufacturers and training agencies hang out. Liveaboard operators tend to be business people, as they are heavily regulated and boats are unforgiving of making mistakes. Big dive shops, with more than 3 stores tend to be run as a business, but they aren't much fun to be around. Little dive shops are a whole lot of fun to be associated with, but don't do very good at business.

DEMA does not understand that divers dive for fun, not business. PADI does understand that, and they market for it. DEMA doesn't seem to get (from the outside looking in) that the vast majority of folks in the dive business do this because it's a blast, and if they only lost a little money over time, all would be good.

I watch you to see if you can fundamentally change DEMAs thinking.

I have had the honor of have been involved long before JYC arrived with his bubble machine, I was an active participant. an observer, and one who has had the opportunity to document the growth of the sport from inception to the present via my published articles , extensive dive dedicated library, and periodical collection.

Indeed, the journey from there to now had been and still is intriguing
