Thanks for the ideas. I’m leaning towards Mexico (Yucatan Peninsula) but have not made up my mind.
My wife wants to make a US West Coast roadtrip. Maybe I can incorporate diving in Monterey, San Diego, etc.
Keep sending ideas. All are appreciated.

Cabo San Lucas offers attractions for divers and non-divers and it is much closer to the part of the world that your family wants to visit than the Yucatan.

Let us know where you go and how it was for divers and non-divers.

For this sort of situation, my go to recommendtion is Ambergris Caye, Belize.

Much of Mexico has lost its luster Six bodies hung from Mexico bridges

Notice that none of those found were tourists. All countries have their own internal issues, Mexico's just seem to be much more publicized.

We were in Cabo the first week of November for the first time ever, and it really opened our eyes and minds, and already planning to go back next year. I think that part of the world is underappreciated for what it offers for vacationing options.

That would really have done it, wouldn't it have? All six were hung in tourist areas over major roads, that's enough for me. I love Mexico, but I have my choice of many other great places to visit. To each their own.

We've loved our trip to Cabo, the sea and the countryside were beautiful and the diving was different and wonderful and the people were really nice, but the reports of increasing violence are something to consider.

In the past on SB we've discussed the issue of "local-on-local violence" and whether or not it should be a factor when making a decision about travel destinations. @Skeptic14 did some research and posted data showing that the overall murder rate of a country does reflect the number of murdered US tourists, see the link below.

Again the numbers are small, and bad things can happen anywhere, and using common sense is always a good rule to follow, but I don't think we can just say "no tourists were involved" in a violent situation and assume that there is no danger.
