The Subsurface development team proudly announces the release 4.5 of Subsurface.
Subsurface-4.5-Screenshot.jpg

This release cycle was a bit longer than we had initially planned, but we think the result was certainly worth the wait. Some of the new additions since Subsurface 4.4:
  • Additional ways to store divelogs. Subsurface cloud storage is now available for a user’s dive data. Now it’s simple to call up your data from any computer running Subsurface, protected with a user name and password. You can even access your data via the web.
  • Dives now reference to dive sites, making it easier to maintain a set of set of sites that can be used again when the user repeatedly dives at the same location. Notes and descriptions of dive sites can now be added as well.
  • GPS data can be used to look up the closest body of water, country, or city
  • Improved print support, letting users customize formats for printing
  • Improved Bluetooth device support
  • VPM-B support for dive planning, giving users a choice of deco algorithms (now works with both Buhlmann ZH16 and VPM-B)
  • Recreational dive planner mode which computes the remaining bottom time for a diver that avoids mandantory decompression stops and stays within the given amount of gas
  • Improved support for freediving
  • Improved image import and management
  • Partial Undo/Redo functionality added

Binaries are available for Windows, Mac, and a number of Linux flavors (Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Fedora, and openSUSE).
Please take a look at our Downloads page (https://subsurface-divelog.org/download/) for details.

How about an Android version? I do not want to lug around a laptop on my Dive trips.

Good question... it's in the works. Needs a lot more UI cleanup and other random work here and there, but we should have a beta version within a month or so.
The goal is full integration with Subsurface cloud storage (so you see the same data on your desktop and your tablet / phone - that part already works) and the ability to download from some dive computers; right now it looks like we'll be able to support Bluetooth dive computers as well as FTDI based USB connections (assuming your Android device support USB OTG) - so that would include many Suunto dive computers as well as the Heinrichs & Weikamp OSTC series.

If you use Subsurface and find out something doesn't work, please report it; either here, the mailing list, the bug tracker, or on irc (#subsurface on freenode.net).

I've just given subsurface ago and have a couple of questions / observations. First off I've been trying to enter all of my dives manually that i did before I had a computer

- The times are tedious to enter, I'd like to just click or tab to the time field and type 0200 "enter" rather than 2 "tab" 00 "tab" am "enter"

- 24 hour time support would be nice to save me having to enter AM or PM and if using AM or PM could it auto fill AM if A was entered or PM if P was entered. Currently if the time was 10:30PM and I had 9:00A entered then pressed "tab" it would revert to 9:00PM

- Is there a way to edit and manage dive sites on there own, I can create a new dive, create a new dive site for that dive then delete the dive log. The dive site will stay which i don't mind however I can't see a way to move / rename / delete this dive site. I also added a dive site with no name, then when i went back to try and edit it and ended up creating a new sit next to it which is now associated with a dive. The unnamed site is still there though and i can't see how to delete it

- I would like to be able to manually enter dive depth and time. Copying from my logbook I just want max depth and time, it can just be a square profile i don't need anything fancy but it is tedious to more the graphical profile around and hard to get it to .1 meter increments

-I don't really need both a buddy and divemaster field. I would rather have a drop down to select either instructor, divemater or buddy then a name field

These are very good points. If you add them individually to the issue tracker at trac.subsurface-divelog.org there's a good chance they'll be fixed soon :)

If you are entering more than a few dives manually, then it is more convenient to use a spread sheet for that. We can import dives that are described in a CSV file. More information can be found from our user manual https://subsurface-divelog.org/documentation/subsurface-4-user-manual/#S_ImportingCSVData (or section 5.3.5. in the in-app manual). But as Henrik said, you do have good points and suggestions for improvement. I have not played with editing the dive sites myself, but I believe it should be possible when you click on the globe button next to the location field. With the little experience I have with the dive site management, you just cannot easily edit an orphaned site nor delete a site, but as said I have very limited experience on this feature and might be missing some options.

True, the dive site management is still missing in v4.5. It's being worked on.

Sorry to be late in responding... I thought I had things set up to be alerted of responses but that apparently didn't work :(

As others have said - I definitely recommend using a spread sheet if you want to add more than a couple of dives

That's lame. What locale settings do you have? Since you're in the US my guess is en_US and then (sadly) am/pm is the default. I need to look into an option to switch the time to 24h more independently of the locale... I'd prefer that as well tbh.

Dive site handling is new and has some issues. Henrik is one of the key people who pushed for us to add this, but as I had predicted from the beginning this turned out to be a massive pain and created a ton of challenges (and is, frankly, one of the main reason it took us so long to get 4.5 released). There is still a lot more that needs to be done.
If you could file specific feature requests at Subsurface that would be really helpful. Ideally one ticket per issue (why, because that makes it easy to track if we have done everything you suggest and makes it easier to discuss individual ideas).

Yes, that's on the list for 4.6

Different people have different needs and it's really hard to keep the UI maintainable and still make everyone happy. A lot of users want to be able to enter the name of the dive guide or dive master separately from the buddy they had with them on the dive. I realize that for people who do a lot of local shore diving with just buddies and no guide that's a bit redundant (as it is for people who go on boats and have no buddy and just follow the guide), but in the end what we have now allows a variety of combinations without adding yet more preferences and customizations. So while I understand what you are asking for, I think we'll keep things as they are with respect to this one...

Subsurface 4.5.1 has been released. It addresses many of the small issues people have found in Subsurface 4.5

  • Several errors in translations were fixed, one of which could cause a crash when running Subsurface in German and using the dive planner.
  • Many translations have been improved, especially the Hebrew translation has made a huge leap forward and is now complete.
  • Two issues related to our integration with divelogs.de were addressed: uploads now work from Windows and uploads from all platforms now correctly recreate location / site information if that information had previously been downloaded from divelogs.de.
  • We fixed a problem that caused a situation where in some environments users weren’t able to edit the print templates.
  • The Suunto EON Steel is now supported on Mac.
  • Tank sizes set on the Suunto EON Steel are now downloaded and added on the equipment tab of the dive.
  • Further support for free divers.
  • Several algorithmic improvements leading to better profiles, better SAC rate visualization, and better detection of the time offset when matching pictures to dives.
  • We fixed several UI issues.
Binaries are available for Windows, Mac, and a number of Linux flavors (Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Fedora, and openSUSE).
Please take a look at our Downloads page for details.
