Hi
Seems I didn't clean and rinse my gear well enough after my last trip and now I see some dried salt on my housing and strobe (S&S YS01)
I'm going to soak them in warm water for a few days.

Should I just use water, or are there additives like vinegar that would help dissolve the salt better?

Is the battery compartment on the YS01 waterproof? ie, can it be washed if needed.

I bought something called "Salt Away" in a local marine supplies store, it came highly recommended by some local gurus...

Someone once pointed out that warm water doesn't dissolve salt much better than cold water. My reaction was to argue but I checked the facts instead and they were correct. I suppose that is why the rocks in the Arctic areas don't have large buildups of salt.

some ideas:

- please ship them to me immediately for appropriate environmental disposal as they are now considered an environmental hazard: (well not likely)

- relax and soak them a bit...

- i have seen "crusted salt" that you can mechanically flake off (this was on a ebay reg hose 3 years after seeing water)
- i have seen crusted camera bag zippers that died after water & vinegar soaking (ebay camera bag) and nwver came aback
- i have seen seen "salt lines" in bcd belts that formed after 5 years years and stayed for more than 10 years

Is your issue outside or inside yur strobes?

S&S strobes seal the battery compartment from the inside of the strobe. I have seen a bit of salt on the bolt threads. oops. Salt inside the a battery is MUCH bad, Salt inside the strobe housing in VERY bad.

You seem to be worried about external salt clusters. Splash the strobes in your tub for a week. If your divebuddy / lifepartner objects invoke rule 34.

You let your gear DRY?

You're obviously not diving enough!

Ocean salinity averages 3.5%. Total solubility exceeds 25%. That is why there is no salt buildup in the arctic. Salt solubility does increase with increasing temperature but not greatly. Salt in ice water dissolves more slowly than in hot water.
