traveling to Coz first time since TSA has been around question

Hi guys,

I'm off to my first trip outside the country since TSA has been around in a couple of weeks. It's also my first diving trip via air since TSA (mostly I drive to SoCal for diving there). I'm packing most of my big dive items, wetsuit, bc, fins, and some other small items, in my check bag but won't have a dedicated dive bag. I just put the expensive stuff (regs, computer and mask) in my carryon bag.

Should I put a note in my check bag explaining what the "different" items are so TSA won't get crazy over it, or is this a non-issue?

Not an issue. Keep essentials in your carry-on in case your checked luggage is mis-routed or stolen.

Your plan is exactly what I do as well. BC, fins, wetsuit, spear gun etc in checked bags, regs mask and camera with me on carry on. Never an issue with them checked in.

IN CASE YOU FLY UNITED Here is their scuba bag policy. Scuba equipment only up to 70 pounds

Basically, it states that there is no weight limit as long as the bag contains "only" scuba equipment. If anything else as added to the bag then the maximum weight limit is 50 lbs.

Dive tanks or rebreather tanks have a separate charge and is noted in the website information.

Be sure to look at that link. There is a lot of additional information you will probably want to know.

Not long ago United changed its baggage policy to Mexico. The first checked bag is now $25 and a second bag is $40. The scuba bag would be your first or second bag, etc. Any tanks are charged a flat fee as noted on united.com.

You can be assured that this is the correct information.

Your diving equipment shouldn't be a problem, just don't include a knife in your carry-on bag. When you go through security if the officer has a question then he/she will ask to inspect your bag - no big deal.

Nothing to do with diving but don't forget the rules for carrying on liquids and gels. I see so many people surprised that they can't carry a bottle of water or a big container of shampoo through security. You can have a single, one-quart zip-lock bag for your carry-on gels and liquids and none of them can be in containers larger than 3 ounces. You can put your bottle of shampoo in the checked bag - well wrapped in plastic - and you can buy a bottle of water after you get through security.

They are usually very strict about this rule. I once saw them confiscate a 4 oz bottle of cologne that only had about an ounce of liquid left in it, go figure.

It's called the 3-1-1 rule, but it actually allows a quart bag with up to 3.4 oz/100 ml bottles. And smaller bags can be used, but not larger. At least they now allow liquids more than 100 mL in your carry-on bag if:

• You are traveling internationally into the United States with a connecting flight;
• they are in transparent containers;
• you bought them at a duty-free shop, and
• the store packed them in a secure, tamper-evident bag.

Yeah, TSA agents already have a lot of leeway on their calls. We don't want to give them too much.

I've seen them go thru so many changes over the decade that I always have to look at their rules again.
