I was originally certified in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba in 2000. I have not seen any diving that's better, and I've been quite a few places.

I can't wait to go... it's been a long time coming.

Funny, there happens to be a liveaboard already in Key West with all of the proper permits. Huh, fancy that.

So did the Spree4all just get better?

This is site has a few locations and the remains of the USS Maine are just outside Havana harbor.

Cuba is really beautiful. The beaches are similar to the Bahamas with white sand, palm trees and warm, clear water in just about every shade of blue and turquoise. Playa Serenas on Cayo Largo was one of Conde Naste's 10 most beautiful beaches in the world when I went 13 years ago, and we had to take a little 14-seat Russian puddle jumper to get there from Varadero. There was no clear cutting on the beach and there were no resorts on Cayo Largo then.

I wasn't a diver yet and did a discovery shore dive off Varadero and snorkelling off Cayo Largo. The diving/snorkelling was ok to pretty good in areas. I was in 25 feet of water or less though, and couldn't go boat diving with the certified divers, and they were raving when they came back. Bahia de Cuchinas (Bay of Pigs), Isla de la Juventud (Isle of Youth), and Jardines de la Reines (Gardens of the Queen) are supposed to be fantastic, very colourful and full of life. I might be going this winter to Gardens of the Queen if everything works out, and I can let you know how it is.

Here is the Anderson Cooper visit with diving footage if you would like to see: The Gardens of the Queen - CBS News

Nothing changes communism faster than capitalism.

I'm glad I went years ago and would love to go back before "y'all" can get in. I'll have to move it on my list now. Jardine de la Riene has had my interest for some time though it seems like a real pain in the butt to get there once one has landed in Cuba.

Definitely a beautiful country. Beaches at Veradero amazing. We were so fortunate that our hotel was last in the chain of hotels running up the beach and so had access to what almost resulted in being a private beach in the middle of nowhere. Spectacular. As is the case in most vacation paradises, this has been replaced with another newer resort and so on and so on and so on.

I'm with Chilly in Canada, better get there quick before the poorly trained masses ruin the diving
