November 2014. We left all of our pets in the care of an elderly dog walker with possible dementia. He forgot to feed the outside feral cat colony and subsequently several have gone missing. (The price I pay to scuba dive.)

We stayed at Secrets Cozumel in a nice ocean view room. Clean and no mold or sewer smell. Quiet air conditioner.
Jacuzzi tub and waterfall shower. Great daily maid service. Always tipped her $5 a day.

The worst part was the three bites I had of the “filet” at the fancy restaurant which was not beef - probably horse meat.
A few nights before, their “mahi mahi” special was probably barracuda. Just awful.

Others suggested to go in to town and eat at a taco stand. The four of us took a cab for lunch “where the locals go” and sure enough, we were the only smiling gringos. Personally, I had the best taco and guacamole in my life; the best food of the vacation. My travel mate ordered something exotic and spent three days with “travelers diarrhea” when it should have been called food poisoning. The doctor came to the hotel and for $100 we got some strange medicines which are not used in the United States.

Diving was with Dive House (again) and I did not get any kind of discount for two people which cost $800 + daily tips.
Next trip I will shop around like others on the dock. Don’t get me wrong, Dive House was great and I felt safe, but twenty dives should get some kind of discount.

This is my second and last time going all-inclusive. Since I’m not a big drinker, even on vacation, and I like really great food - this was not for me. Teased with teeny tiny serving of chips and guacamole and small pieces of grouper. Shame on me for eating an over-fished, critically endangered species. I am so sorry that was the only delightful meal, aside from one eggs benedict via room service.

Sitting poolside, we ordered cheeseburgers one afternoon. Bad choice. Another day, it was a fabulous order of guacamole and chips. Days later, the waitress tells me those are only reserved for the dining room but she would make an exception and brought over a mini serving of about 2 ½ bites.

Luis the server was excellent and remembered us and was very polite and professional.
He stood out as the best waiter at Secrets.

When we went in to town where the locals go and on the ferry from Cancun, nobody smiled. Nobody. Here we are American tourists and we are smiling and so happy to be somewhere warm. It must be hard to work there and have a fake smile on all day.

We bought souvenirs off the strip and from the locals. They were not pushy.

Thought my travel mate would enjoy the ferry from Cancun but he did not and it seemed to be a burden. Next time we fly direct.

My question is : best food in Cozumel? I have learned my lesson about eating “beef” in Mexico. The Cancun airport has the ****tiest, most expensive food and holy crap you do not want to eat there - especially Johnny Rockets as the cheeseburgers were not from happy cows. I do not know what the funk that was but after three bites it was no way Jose.

All-inclusive gets real boring plus we need to see Cozumel in all its glory. I am so tired of booking fab dive trips to be completely dissatisfied with the food. LCBR food was a step below that of Secrets. Bonaire food was also pretty darn bad.
Except for Hagen. Maybe next time I will pack a suitcase of frozen select cuts of beef and bring my own prawns. Really? Just kidding. Kind of. Why hasn’t my beloved Ruth’s Chris opened a store at one of these diving spots? One would think we would be enjoying fresh fish and it’s like The Keys all over again where we’re fed farmed fish from another place.

I don’t know why people return year-after-year-after year to the same spots in the big ocean. Variety is so much more fun. I do not like swimming with the lionfish which is what makes Cozumel so colorful and healthy underwater. Did not see one lionfish! Florida Keys are over run with them and you do not see many queen angel fishies or the vibrant colors from the olden days. Would never waste my money there.

Loved it that the dive masters always told divers to not kick the reef. Watched as they had to assist several divers each day. Several men were diving when they should have stayed poolside with their baby bumps. It was good nobody died. Seriously. If you’re going to be a scuba diver, you need to stay in shape.

All inclusive is a nice package to sell to tourists who need that in their plan, but it can get old - true. I am not a foodie really, but the same old style can get tiresome. You don't need to bring food tho. There are many good places in town. It'd be nice if town was closer to beaches and the best diving, and you didn't have to drive thru that disgusting cruise ship area, but it's not a big trip - except to the taxi drivers.

There are a few places to get decent beef in Cozumel - Del Sur is reputed to have good Argentine Beef, though I always fill up on the empanadas; Pepe's Grill used to have excellent Prime Rib, though I haven't eaten there for a while; and I have read good reviews on Pie al Carbon (though I've never eaten there. But Cozumel is really a place for fresh seafood and great Yucatan Pork dishes - like Cochinita Pibil on Sunday afternoon at El Moro. Personally, after coming to Cozumel for 24 years now (and I'll be returning in 4 days now), I would never do All Inclusive on Cozumel. There are just too many really good restaurants, everything from the high end places, La Cocay, Kinta, Kondesa, etc., to the local landmarks, like El Moro, Casa Mission, Pancho's Back Yard, Guido's Rolandi's, to the newer places like New Especias and Gusto's, not to mention Del Sur. Then there are real gems for lunch, like Pescaderia San Carlos, La Perlita, Chilangos, and many more. In a trip of 7 days, I don't even have enough time to get to all of my favorites. All Inclusives are fine, even great, for locations with fewer dining options or, like Jamaica, where leaving the resort compound is risky. But not for Cozumel.

We were at the Sunscape Sabor last year, and decided not to go AI this year because we wanted more variety of the food. (And since the food was hit or miss, better food...)

The one thing that was fabulous there was the chips and guacamole and quesadillas. They'd give us massive portions. Sorry Secrets was so stingy with the guac.

The only thing that makes me nervous is I really have no idea what the food budget is going to be, and I also hate the idea of having to FIND a place to eat twice a day... I wish someone would just make me a schedule, complete with walking directions :)

Easy walking from Suites Bahia
Lunch
Thirsty Cougar - across the street. Fajitas are enough for 2 for lunch
Casa Cuzimil - one block up turn left. Comida del dia - 70 pesos
Otates - 3 blocks up turn left on 15. walk 1/2 block on left. Don't be put off by the look, fabulous pozole, gringas (ate there 5 times in a month)
La Choza -2 blocks up turn left. Comida del dia is not on the menu, but ask
Le Chef 1 block up turn right. Our favorite for dinner. Everyone eats on the street.
Especias - 1 1/2 blocks up on right. Great Italian for dinner.

These are all within easy walking distance.

Sorry you had such a horrid trip Partystar.

I too have found the beef there is a bit different than what we in the US are used to. Doesn't make it bad, or horse meat, it just makes it different.

Thanks! I've been taking notes based on scubaboard and trip advisor, but no one has given me directions yet :)

I tried using google maps, but they seem pretty horrible. Things I know are in one place are pinpointed in other places, so I didn't think I could trust them.

Great list jbjclj. I stay at Bahia when I go to Coz and have tried all on your list except the one closest...the Thirsty Cougar. Hopefully I don't sound snobby cuz I'm not...but from the outside it didn't appear like the Cougar would have decent food. It also seemed like a hangout for cruisers. If the food's good that's great!

Try the onion rings

For a great burger in the evening: walking out of the Bahia go 3/4 block inland to 5th Ave. 1/2 block south to the Burger house. It is a shack attached to the S side of Villa Las Angles. Great local wood charcoal fired grilled hamburger any way you what it (+ Mushrooms, bacon, onions, pineapple etc) fries and a soda (no beer but you can BYO) for $65 MEX. I think it is only open Wednesday thru Sunday. When you see the locals line up for take out orders, you know it's good.

Try the onion rings
Being a cheap bastard the Thirsty Couger is a little pricey for me (it is on the waterfront so their rent is high) but the onion rings are great and I have to second the recommendation.
