I know we have dogs back home that are not being saved....but these are 2 dogs that we could save. Both were adopted in about a week. I think in the Toronto area we have big dogs (labs, retrievers, etc) or small dogs (yorkies, etc) but no medium sized dogs. Both dogs we brought were medium sized at about 20-22 lbs.

Our rescue groups seem to get a lot of dogs from Northern Quebec or way up north in the tundra. I will save a dog whenever I can.

Could be like here in Fairbanks, where the local animal shelter is plume full of Sled dogs on a never ending basis. They have an indoor section of the animal shelter, and a outdoor section where the sled dogs are. Most of them never get adopted, so its like a never ending rotation. Its a lot better I suppose then how the dog mushers would take an entire retiring team or pups that didn't make the cut, and shoot them and stack them in a pile in the woods for them to rot and get ate by the Ravens.
On a happier not both my yellow lab mixes also came from a rescue (golden retriever), and much rather see people adopt dogs from anywhere in the world before going and paying a breeder. Please at least attempt to adopt in your home local, before looking elsewhere, then do what your heart says. And as Bob Barker said " Spay and Neuter your dogs and cats" or something like that :)

I, too, believe that there are too many strays here/locally/regionally/nationally but... As my wife believes, and I've firmly come to believe through experience (5 dogs), we don't find them, they find us! Some end up staying, some end up leaving (to other homes). Not trying to get too cosmic, but in the end, it was all meant to be. In a globally shrinking world, helping someone/somedog wherever you may be, disregarding borders, is a good thing to do. Sometimes, when you look at that stray in the eyes, you just know the right thing to do.

How long will it take them to learn how to speak english?:D

No english needed. Cookie treats are universal!

How localized do you all want to get? A friend of mine is a pilot and she regulraly volunteers her time and plane to fly rescue dogs from Texas to Colorado for their new homes. Should we argue that nobody in Colorado should be rescuing dogs from Texas when there are perfectly good rescue dogs in Colorado? How about nobody from Boulder should be rescuing a dog from a Denver rescue shelter when there are good dogs to rescue right in Boulder. Seesh! Come on folks. If you want to help out the Cozumel Humane Society, give them a hand, but why crap all over the good work they are doing? If you all are so concerned with with local dog rescue issues, you could get involved or donate some money to a local shelter instead of bitching about a dog getting a second chance at life in Cozumel. A dog getting a second chance at life anywhere is a good thing isn't it?

Adopt at home or adopt abroad...just adopt. My little terrorist, Dixie, is from the Dallas SPCA. I support the Cozumel HS personally and on the Shark Tank because I think they do very good work with what they have to work with and the island has more than it's share of neglected, discarded and unwanted animals as well as uneducated people when it comes to pet management.

...stupid debate. If you want to adopt a pet in Mexico or at home, what does it matter? Animals need homes in both places and if someone is willing to take on the responsibility of a pet, that's great...period. heck, if your home can accommodate more than one pet, get one of each! Do Mexican dogs bark in Spanish? :D

all's I'm saying is that there are folks out there that DO want to adopt from the Cozumel shelter, some even do it without even setting foot in on the island! you can adopt right from the HS website without even coming to Coz.

For that reason and because some animals are still being taken care of medically when they are adopted, and can't go home immediately with their new owners, the HS needs people to help bring the animal to it's new home, and if you are willing to do it, they would much appreciate the help.

If you can't or don't feel right about getting a pet abroad, please visit a local shelter or rescue and get your pet that way. There are literally millions of unwanted and discarded pets in the U.S. alone.

If you are not a pet person, but would like to help. All shelters, including Cozumel's can always use monetary donations. Food, comforts, medical supplies, building maintenance and staff wages are not free.

Does the humane society there in Cozumel still need dog crates? We donated and brought two down we didn't need anymore a long time ago for them, but this was before the airlines started charging for checked luggage. Back then it was simple to bring extra things down if you had extra capacity, or extra baggage allowance you weren't using. I imagine today this is a different story.

send them an e-mail and ask, I'm sure they could always use them.

It isn't as silly a question as it sounds. Dogs understand the language they are trained in. If the shelter spends time training the animals (our local ones do)- you'd need to learn Spanish for any of the commands to work.
