I have had the opportunity to use a Scubapro first stage with an Apeks second stage and the combo worked perfectly fine in cold waters of New Jersey. Is there any real (technical) reason why we should not mix first and seconds from different brands or models? Or is this a sales driven ideology intended by companies to ensure that anyone buying a Scubapro first stage should not go out and buy a different model of second stage?

Exactly. Tune the second to the first that has a proper IP setting and there is no issue.

Thank Heaven, I thought I might have to go find matching seconds for regs.

It's a sales pitch for a package deal. Buy them together to save money.
It's like skiing/snowboarding, you bindings/board/boots don't have to all be the same brand, find the ones that fit you the best, you just find the better deal when buying new if you buy as a package. As far as service I've never had a shop that couldn't service multiple brands, but YMMV.

I have never seen matching regs on my buddy's rig. Sherwood, Apeks, SP even poseidon. On his doubles 4 different stages 4 different manufacturers :) he proved you can mix them
