Like ams511 stated, the decision to buy a travel BC or not, is mainly a matter of where and what kind of diving you do most.

I'm 90% a warm water travel diver. As expected, the smaller size and weight is a lot easier to travel and dive with. Water 80 deg and above, I dive in shorts, t-shirt, no weight. Shooting video wearing minimal gear is a pleasure and has benefits.

I got my wing used on Ebay for $140, Oxycheq soft plate $50, webbing $15. Well worth it to me. I already had tank bands, D-rings and buckle.

I am a warm water diver but living in Miami I really don't need to travel far. I have an Halcyon system which could also be used for cold water. It is not as light or as small as Ron's but it is usable. Especially for me because I do wear a wetsuit and need the weight. If you have a travel BC you like then I would just concentrate on the technical equipment for now.

my entire kit can fit in a carry on bag:

hog reg (cheap and the same as apex/hollis/) - mi flex hoses, 1.5" spg, Zeagle Octo-z

zeagle express tech - love it, or any small b/w will work

force fins - great fins and super small (always on ebay for around $150)

the rest is all the same.

for under $1k you will have a great travel setup.

Beg to differ, they are not the "same" as Apeks, they are similar. What Hollis regs are they the "same" as? Cheers.

Made in the same factory and same parts more of less. Maybe not Hollis but no dif between xtx and hog d1/2/epic, aside from the price...

This weeks you can get a hog reg for $180. One hell of a deal.

What's special about the reg set? Light? Compact? What are the models?

My reg set is a Scubapro MK-25 first stage with full size octo. The whole set up is very heavy. I would like it to go on a diet.

I used to have the apex flight regulator and just found it not as good as a large regular reg. while not lighter you can use a octo inflate (personal preference) and all mid flex hoses and a small spg to save some weight. I like this setup not for the weigh savings but the flexibility and that I can take off the octo z and makes my packing much easier.

So, are you saying that Apeks regs and HOG regs are made in the same factory?

I did not know Apeks produced regulators for other companies.
From the Apeks-homepage:
At our purpose built factory in Blackburn, England, we design, develop, test, manufacture, and assemble our products which gives us complete control. All our processes use the latest technology and state of the art equipment. Our rigorous procedures comply with the highest standards under the European Quality Assurance System BS EN ISO 9001 ensuring Apeks' quality which is the envy of others.

Sorry, you are mistaken they are most definitely not made in the same factory, Apeks are manufactured in the UK, HOG in Taiwan (?), Hollis not sure.
