Canon DSLRs for Video

Other than once owning a Canon 7D, I am not well versed on the video capabilities of many Canon Cameras. Would the video shot with a 7D be better or the same as one shot with a T3 or T4 Rebel? If so, why and what are the deciding factors that make the video acquisition superior or not.​

From my experience you will get better results from the 7D. The 7D is a much faster camera than the Rebel and will pick up imaging at a greater rate. You can also use a much faster compact flash card with the 7D than with the Rebels which makes download time from the camera to the card much faster. I will talk to some of our people for more information about your inquiry and see if they have better information on the differences than I do.

While what Equinox says is true, a 5 or 7D would be used mostly for broadcast quality video. I shoot HD video with a T2i and it is great.

I've shot video with the 7D, T2i, T3i and T4i. I find the video quality to be the same from all of them. Any of the Canon cameras video quality is outstanding and one of my favorite systems for UW video.

As Equinox points out, the 7D uses CF cards which read and write quicker. All the other use the slower SD cards. I've never found it a limiting factor on any of the cameras though, unless you plan to record non-stop video clips of longer than 10 minutes. (You shouldn't.)

I shot this with my canon 5 d mark II in Aquatica housing with dual HiD lights from halcyon ( powered by cannister battery you wear on your belt--not on your camera).

The canon 5 d mark II is great for low light with the 16 to 35 mm lens I use.....you may get one at a deal now that the mark III is out....
The initial baitfish footage was just shot with ambient light, and the other footage with with the HID lights. I can run ambient very well with white balancing down to around 20 feet deep or so, but any deeper and I don't plan on this with out lights...though there are many shooters that run the 5D down to 50 feet with just ambient, and then white balance--both with camera and then potentially in post do a white balance or color correct.

I edit with Vegas video....very easy to learn, very powerful 64 bit editing. I also have Adobe Premiere, but found it very clunky from an operational stand point.

I have the 7d and T2i, and I agree with you. The video quality is the same.

Thanks all, really appreciate the info. I assume that if the T2i's video is the same quality as the 7D then the video from the T 3 or 4 would also be equal. Correct me if I am wrong on that assumption.
