Well, my granddaughter & I were playing a coupon game at the grocery, and WE WON! I'd thought we had won an "iPad" but I guess it was an "iPod." Stupid company thought it great to give them similar names - fail, Apple!

So the grocery actually sent me a $130 check, and she really wants the iPod Touch. I looked around online, finally figuring out to look for a ipod, not an ipad, and there seems to be a lot of gimmicks online, attack sites, scam sites, etc. Twoxi.com has a great offer, nice looking site, but no contact info, not much about them online, and really looks too good to be true. Eavs Online Outlet is listed at a good price, but my anti-virus blocks it. Haloway Express looks good, but again not much info? Ecrater sends me to Vilaylive, but no info at all. Of course I'd have credit card protection, but who wants to play games? This may be a good time to pay more and buy locally.

Also looks like an expensive gadget for a kid, easy to lose, break, get wet, etc. I'm asking my daughter if this is a good idea? I do know a good site for extended warranty. Looks like there would be accessories to keep up with too, forget, lose, etc.

The computer generation is great, but sometimes I think we're getting carried away...!

Honestly for an Ipod touch, very hard to beat Costco! It's about $10 cheaper than most places and Costco has the best return policy out there so no need for any extended warranty. Even it breaks down 1.5 or 2 years later, normally not a problem returning it.

Robert

How old is the granddaughter ? I can tell you things change fast and young children are computerized I think if she is over 8 a touch will be fine for her. She will teach you how to run it. Just explain that you won't replace it just because she looses a piece. I would not spend the money. The cost / reward drops substantially after the warranty period and there are very few problems after the first year

Thanks, but that's 300 miles from us.

8 or 9. Square Trade has a good extended warranty, but adding drops & spills runs it up to $40 for 2 years. :(

Really, she has too many gadgets, but I guess kids do these days.

I'd be very reluctant to buy an iPod Touch - or any Apple product from someone who is selling it at much less than Apple's price since it's likely a scam or an older model. Apple controls pricing thru their retailers pretty consistently so any price much below 10% off list is suspect.

It comes with headphones so the only accessories needed might be an external charging dock - some add speakers also. You should know that it's also an Internet device so will need a WiFi connection to function best. It will also need to be docked to a PC/Mac to transfer songs/games etc. - and to re-charge. Cables/dock for that are included. Most people buy an external charger, they're inexpensive and you don't need to leave your PC running to charge the iPod.

It's an iTunes device - not free either - except for a very limited selection of music and podcasts that can be downloaded. Most songs on iTunes are .99 - requires a credit card for access. Games often run in the several dollar range and there's also both free and paid software applications available for it also. You can also activate the built-in parental controls to limit what can be downloaded/accessed by the device. Anything that costs or is outside the appropriate age group will require an adult to enter a password. And it also functions as a web browser and an instant messaging client so you may want to restrict that also for her safety. With Facetime, it will do streaming video to/from another compatible iPod/iPad/iPhone also. A Touch is basically an iPhone without the cellular phone part - requires WiFi to connect.

Apple's website lists it starting at $199 - iPod touch - Buy iPod touch with 8GB, 32GB, or 64GB - Apple Store (U.S.)
Best Buy has them for $175 - iPod: iPod Touch, nano, Shuffle & Classic - Best Buy
So does Amazon.com - Amazon.com: ipod touch - free shipping but IDK if they've started charging tax in TX yet or not.

I buy a lot of electronics online and have never heard of any of the sites in your first post. Since both Amazon and Bestbuy have it for $175 - that's the real price.

agree with steve - apple is the scubapro of gadgets (very controlling where things are officially sold) & you're looking at the equivalent of leisurepro websites. stick with legit places - best buy, walmart, target, apple store, etc.

my 5yo has one (bought used off ebay, last generation not newest) and can use it perfectly. cool that y'all won!

Another budget option is Apple factory reconditioned. Find it at Apple.com.

I recommend a couple of apps to help with finding great, useful apps - often for free. Get AppShopper and Apps Gone Free.

The Touch is a wonderful personal learning tool, with a plethora of fun, instructive apps. Friends in Cozumel have been asking if I am taking Spanish lessons. No, I have found several free language apps and podcasts ( Coffeebreak Spanish) and play them often.

Also, all music does not have to be purchased at Apple Store. You can access (and download) your music library by syncing to your computer, or use TuneIn Radio or Pandora apps to stream the types of music you enjoy.

This is, by no means, an exhaustive list, but only a quick version of how my Touch has become a favorite item of mine. I look forward to reading how others have used their iPod Touches!

Congrats on winning! She'll love it. Get her a little cover of some sort so it isn't so slippery. I scored two silicone covers at Target for $5, and they make for a much more secure grip.

Thanks for the insight, everyone. So, I guess I'll just give the proceeds to my daughter to help fund the I-Touch fox Xmas she wants to get her - and let her deal with the responsibility issues.

I do also avoid designated shop & gift occasions like Xmas that sends people out spending too high prices on too much, often for the wrong reasons and in competition with other gifters - I just don't play that game, rather giving when I want to, but this time I'll split the obligation event.

If they sent you a check, how about just buying one off of Craigslist? I've got 2 iPod's that I don't use anymore because I have the iPad and iPhone. I'm sure you could find one in excellent/new condition.

I just gave the check to my daughter. They want to find the best deal on the 32 Gb Ipod Touch. It should cover half of the cost we hope - depending on pre-Xmas sales. They're looking at November, but I will look around Crag's and Ebay.
