iPhone Dive Computer

Man, this must have been like the conversations when dive computers first came on the scene or when they developed a printer and people were violently defending their typewriters.

FWIW, I want this product but only when they release it on Android, I contacted Igills and actually got a response, sadly no ETA as to when they'll have it on Android.

Straight from their mouths, I can't stand the Iphone but LOVE this concept and Android.

If I trust the manufacturers of my camera not to screw me, if I trust the manufacturers of my BCD/Reg to not screw me, and if I trust the manufacturers of the tanks and hoses to not screw me, then I think I can trust the people making a dive computer to not screw me.

If you don't trust the manufacturers of this product, then you sure as hell shouldn't be trusting the manufacturers of any of your diving equipment that is far more likely to kill you.

People are funny when it comes to technology, it seems like every generation has it's kryptonite that they just can't absorb.

I'm trying to picture where you attach the IPhone and how you see it underwater? Does the case have some sort of way to attach it to your BC? That's the biggest thing I see going against using the iPhone as a computer. It's not exactly wrist-sized, especially with an underwater housing.

I like the concept, but if it were to flood my iphone and I'm on some remote trip that would really suck. I've seen high end camera housings flood, so I know it can and will happen to people. I would much rather flood a go pro HD hero 2 or similar setup than my iphone.

Also, the bad thing is I've had apps delete themselves and or crash. Many times you are forced to do a hard reset on your phone. The bad news is that all of your important data i.e. nitrogen loading, possible deco time would likely be lost and then you're sitting there guessing what to do. I just see too many risks for failure for something like this.

Cool idea but there are issues....

1. The lanyard looks very cheep. Easily fixed but why so cheap to secure $600+ worth of stuff?

2. Waterproof to 133' does not inspire confidence.

3. IDevices crash. So do computers in general, and the more advanced, the more stuff running, the more likely a crash.

4. Computers are subject to viruses.

5. How is sensitive dive data stored so it is not lost in the event of a crash?

6. What models are used like RGBM?

Nice idea but there are definitely issues.

If you flood a dive computer you lost your dive data. Flood your phone and you may loose all sorts of stuff like phone numbers of Dive Ops, Hotel reservations, and Angry Bird high scores!

I normally like your posts, but these are really your objections to this gadget?

In answer to:

#3 the only app running at the time of your dive is the igills app.

#4 then no one would ever sync their dive computer with a desktop or laptop for fear of a virus. And I have yet to see a single iPhone virus.

#5 When my iPhone crashes all my sensitive data is still intact. And it's all there when the phone reboots too.

I do agree that the loss of Angry Birds High scores is possibly the worst thing that can happen, but fortunately for me those are all in sync and backed up to my Laptop and iCloud

I love how people react with the "What if it dies" question. Oh well... then I guess you die too!?!?

If it fails, hopefully you still have the best computer ever built between your ears and the superior dive skills acquired from countless hours of reading Scubaboard to safely abort the dive and learn to not trust gadgets.

It is a gadget and it's not for everyone, I personally wouldn't buy it. But I wouldn't mind taking it for a spin until the novelty wore off.

and this is the reason enough using your iphone as a dive computer is a horrendous idea. WHEN MY IPHONE CRASHES. because it will crash, and everyone knows it will crash, and it will crash at the worst possible moment, and then your screwed.

if someone ever said, "when xyz dive computer crashes, just restart it" I wouldn't own xyz as a primary dive computer. Its that simple.

Do you dive a computer?

If so, what do you do if your dive computer malfunctions?

My point is that people act like a computer malfunctioning while you're diving is the end of the world and you are inevitably going to die if it does happen.

I'm certainly more concerned about commercial airline pilots using iPads for navigation than I am about someone using an iPhone as a dive computer for recreational diving.

As a side note, my answer was for his specific question as to how is sensitive data stored so it's not lost in the event of a crash. My answer, no data is lost when the phone crashes.

Here we go around the mulberry bush.... I think we should all go back to the start of this thread and everyone should simply repost their arguements for and against I-gill phone apps. However, this time we can correct spelling and add humerous asides... If you want to dive with your phone, please do... I would love to get a call from some one at 80 ft. or better yet on tri-mix dive so I could here the funny voices.... I think it would be a hoot to text my exwife a picture of me pretending to be dead inside a wreck...pinned to the ceiling with my reg floating next to me ( I might make that one a valentines card).

Yea but there is virtually no difference between the 4s and iphone 5.... unless you ask an Apple user!

I'm hoping that they'll develop a dive housing/computer for the Galaxy Note 2, then not only could I use the Note 2 as a dive computer but I could use it as a full on slate as well!

Or for 5.5" angry birds underwater.....
