Hi all!

I've been diving for about 6 years now, and after my most recent trip to Bonaire, and having to deal with an 16 lb. weightbelt, I'm trying to find some solution to this. I've seen and heard good things about the little teeny wing/real inflation type BCDs with the metal backplate that takes care of part of your weight, but don't really know the first place to begin. I know these things are often sold in pieces so you can add the parts you need, but that's where my knowledge stops.

I'm not even sure who to look to for brands and such.

Help?

backplate/wing (BP/W) - search will turn up more than you can imagine.....

Yes you can go with a backplate and wing that help reduce some of your weight but a steel tank might be more benificial for you

supposed to be the greatest thing since the BC.... I actually think it evolved from some vintage diving schmuck who was drunk at the time, and put on his old hard backpack, and then put his horse-collar BC on backwards.... the darn thing seemed to work...... and now he is a millionaire.....

Okay - enough yarns...

They are an exceptionally simple concept that flies in the face of marketing....

I've done this in the few places that have steel as rentals, unfortunately most don't - and as a Candian who has to fly to my prefered dive spots It's not economical to bring tanks with me.

Tobin will educate you, annoy you, and hook you up with some of the best stuff out there (no more than you need, and no less) at a good price.

Just a word of warning . . . if you are diving with 16 lbs on a belt, you are not going to be able to use a little-bitty wing. But if you call Tobin, he'll explain that to you.

but if he is currently diving with 16# of weight, it might be because of the excess bouyancy of his BCD.... not that it will all go away....

If he makes the switch from a fully padded traditional BC to a steel BP/W, his weight belt may drop to as low as 6 lbs. Doable for a small wing.
