We are coming to Cozumel in January and I understand you have to buy a ticket for the transfer to your hotel (SCC). How much is this in pesos and US dollars? We will be bringing US $$ even though we are Canadian. Should we buy some pesos here at home before hand for this van transfer?

And going back we'll have to catch a taxi to the airport. Will it be the same price?

I paid $10 US for the taxi from Blue angel to the airport for 2 people.
The shuttle vans from the airport to the resorts vary in price by distance. I believe SCC was around 70 or 80 pesos. You can pay in US dollars, (not sure about Canadian dollars), but the price is around $8 US oneway/each person.

Hi Betty- Take photocopies of your passport, exchange your Canadian down there at several banks, not all will. Also if you open a bank account with HSBC in Canada you can withdraw your funds in Pesos and get a very good return. Thats what I do. I do not have it attached in any way to any other accounts. Every other account I have is with TD. There are a couple HSBC banks with machines. One is downtown at the square the other a little south of downtown on 30 ave.
Your taxi will certainly take the American. The exchange at home is not favourable on Pesos. Have fun.

Thanks but I do not take Cdn $$ to the Caribbean except Cuba.

I have a US account here at home and bought almost $3K this year when our dollar was higher. I only take US $$ when I travel to Roatan, Jamaica and plan to do so for Cozumel. I just wanted to confirm I could buy the van transfer in US $$. $8/person is okay and cheaper back is even better. I have over $100 in $1's and another $100 in $5's. Plus some $10's and $20's since I will be paying tips with those.

We will be going to the store to buy pop & snacks for our room since SCC is not AI though we did buy the 3-meal package. Will get change in pesos then but hopefully not much.

Thanks everyone. I like to be prepared.

There's a big supermarket near Scuba Club that takes credit cards.

Thanks Hatul but I don't like to use credit cards either as they charge an additional 2% foreign fee on top of the exchange rate.

I always take a bunch of 1's & 5's & 10's, not so much 20's.
The ones are good for tips to the maid, waiters, baggage handlers, and the guy who makes coffee in the lobby at 5am.
The 5's & 10's are good for the DM/captain tips.
Have fun in COZ.

$2 bills are more fun. :D

I opened a citibank account to use during travel, as they do not charge a foreign transaction fee - at least on the card I got.

The fee to Blue Angel on the collectivo vans went up to $10. Taxi ride back was the same.

The wise advice is take pesos, it's Mexico
This is the best advice if you want to save money.
For example: a cab from Fiesta Americana to the Plaza is $10 US. It is alternatively 100 Pesos. 100 Pesos = $7.35 US
Taxi from the airport to FA cost me $114 Pesos. My Friends paid $11.50 US. 114 Pesos = $8.40 US
Restaurant bill for four $85 US. or 960 Pesos. 960 Pesos = $70 US

The difference in price on the restaurant tab paid for the cab ride there and back.

We're talking real money here.
