Thank you - you are correct - as the stepdaughter, I would very much like to find out what really happened, and while I know that some things said here may not be positive, if it helps get to the truth, I'm ok with that.

I would like to point out to whomever mentioned the heart attack on the golf course - my stepmother was in great health...pretty safe bet she did not have a heart attack,

Hi Laura. Very sorry for your loss. Was she traveling alone?

It is difficult to get accurate info there, and even tho an autopsy will probably be performed there, a second one once repatriated will be more dependable.

Welcome to Scubaboard, Laura; so sorry this was your introduction.

I recommend taking that "diver left the group" statement with a large grain of salt. It may simply be the paper's way of saying, "she was separated from the group".

Condolences to you and your father, and thank you for coming here.

Laura, if your dad was diving with that group then he may have the best available info. To my knowledge, no one here knows exactly where they were diving (possibly the shipwreck) and what events led up to her apparently being separated from the group. That does not mean that she left the group .

It is not uncommon for a diver(s) to get slightly ahead, behind or sideways separated from the group. In some cases they or their bubbles may be hard to see, but that does mean that there is any danger involved.

Anyone know which dive Op this was and contact info...?
We were at the table next to these divers yesterday...
Do you know where they were staying and who she was traveling with?

Tourists drowned when diving in Chankanaab

ARANA Yaneli

COZUMEL, November 21 .- The month of November recorded the third death of a tourist in the waters of Cozumel, in this case is Susan Stevenson, who was diving near the ecological park "Chankanaab" and was reported two hours after its disappearance into the sea by personnel conducting the tour, being found already dead, meanwhile, the ministerial authorities are already investigating the case.

The incident took place Monday at 07:30 hours when the boat "Sleeping Shark" out of the creek located in the north hotel zone, with four people on board, who went to the reef which is located near the park ecotourism "Chankanaab."
On arriving there the group of friends, including the now deceased, were thrown into the sea with scuba equipment, but until 09:30 hours noticed that Susane Stevenson, 66-year-old from Baltimore, United States , who was staying at the Reef Hotel Regency, had disappeared.
For what they gave to the authorities who began to search, still miles ahead found the lifeless body of the unfortunate tourists, and proceeded to move her to the facilities of the creek, where two ambulances were already waiting, as originally reported that it was only an unconscious person.
Then the paramedics of the hyperbaric chamber, tried to give first aid, but all in vain, because the tourists had no vital signs, giving notice to the ministerial authorities of death.
Personnel arrived at the place of the Public Ministry, the State Judicial Police (PJE), experts in the field of criminology in the Attorney General's Office (PGJE) who conducted the survey for the oxygen tank and moved the body in the Medical Service ambulance Forensic (Semefo) for necropsy and thus determine the actual cause of death, as everything indicates that treatment of asphyxia by drowning.
But ministry officials are conducting investigations as to the harbourmaster's office was not notified of the disappearance of the tourist, not until she was found dead.
With this death makes three tourists who have died this month when he dived into the sea, the first was William Bill Fox, 49, last November 12 when diving on the reef Santa Rosa, the second occurred 13 months current Jóse Struch, 65 years old, was killed near the reef, "Santa Rita" and Susan Stevenson on Monday, 66.

I would agree with the points made by others in terms of the phrase "got separated from the group" or any variation on this sentence. WHo knows what that means?
As a woman with a similar age and experience, I doubt she left the group to say, go spear hunting for lion fish! We tend to be a conservative group of divers and follow the dive plan
I was wondering if whatever happened to her is what may have caused her to somehow "separate". I were in some sort of distress and others did not notice, I could see getting left behind, alone to sort out xyz..

I have often said what I hear others saying, ie because a person died while diving does not mean that the diving precipitated the event. However, that is a conclusion that we should not jump to in every event. If it were me, I would hope that there would be as complete and investigation as possible. For example, do they impound dive equipment in Cozumel?

Heavier's posted news story suffers from translation problems as usual, but "who was staying at the Reef Hotel Regency" may help Laura, altho I'm not sure about that name?

First, let me state that I HAVE NO IDEA OF THE CONDITIONS ON THE DATE OF POOR SUZANNE'S DEMISE.

However, when I was there the first week of November, the current on the wreck was kickin'! Swimming as hard as I could still had me backing up about 3" a second. It was definitely a hands-on, pull yourself forward dive. In spite of not being deep, we all went through our tanks PDQ.

Laura,

First, please accept my sincerest condolences to you and your family for this tragic loss.

The dive operator and crew were with the authorities all afternoon yesterday and by now I am certain have spoken more in depth with your father. I have sent you a private message with the contact information for the owner of the dive operation so that may help you locate your father.

I heard the distress call over the radio and I know the story as it was relayed by someone on the dive, but I was not there so it will be best coming from your father.

Please don't pay attention to the horrible translations of the news articles. They are FULL of misinformation from start to finish.

My thoughts and prayers remain with your family.
