Many of you may recall an individual who was impersonating a public safety diver (and Master Scuba Diver Trainer) on this forum. He was arrested last week for impersonating an officer with the Royal Canadian Mounter Police. Before being flamed out on this forum he was claiming he the training officer for CAST (Canadian Amphibious Scuba Team).

Suspect charged after impersonating RCMP commander at legion

Officers recovered a police uniform during a search of a Winnipeg home.
Updated: Mon Nov. 01 2010 10:39:13

A suspect was arrested after he went to the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 315 in East St. Paul and claimed he was the commander of the local RCMP detachment, police said.
He went to the legion first on Oct. 13 and returned again on Oct. 29, at which point he was arrested, officers said.
Officers later found a variety of police paraphernalia including a police uniform during a search of a Winnipeg home.
Thomas David Hanaway, 52, of Winnipeg was charged with two counts of impersonating a peace officer, two counts of breaching recognizance and four counts of breaching probation.
East St. Paul RCMP officers said they would like to advise the public that Thomas Hanaway, also known as Tom Hanna, is not, nor has he ever been, associated with the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

I had some across him a while back on another site where he had posted some pictures of me and my team doing an operation and had gone on to say this was he, and Joe and Mike on such and such operation ..., etc, etc. I called his bluff, pointed out to everyone where the pictures were taken and when and the link to the original news article that accompanied the photos. I tried to track him down to let the local boys know what he was up to , but he was gone.

Why exactly is this a crime?

At the time of his arrest he was posing as the member in charge of the local detachment. The Criminal Code of Canada states that someone who has not been designated as a Peace Officer and impersonates a Peace Officer is guilty of an offence

It is also against the law to impersonate a police officer in the United States.
