Your thoughts on a used set

So far I don't know too much about this set but he is going to send me photos later.

I know it is approx 6 years old.

Mares BC - He doesn't know what model yet.

Oasis 2 Regulators with pressure/depth/compass - I think its all there.

Fins- Not sure

Wetsuit - Warmer water but doesn't know the brand yet. I believe it has boots and hood.

Tank - One steel (he thinks) tank. It might be a dumb ? but how can I tell for sure what the tank material is. Magnet?

I know I don't have a lot of info yet but thought I would post it here to see what you guys thought. As of now I'm mostly curious about the regs. What is a relative fair market price for these?

he wants 400 for the entire kit. I figure is its really a steel tank then thats probably 1/3 the price at least right there. Or am I wrong?

I'd have to see it all first.
Remember....the regs wll need about $75.00 - 100.00 in service.
The tank will need hydro and vis...another $35.00 - 50.00
If the tank is steel and not a real old one....you might have a decent deal.
The rest will hinge on the condition of the gear.

If it's one of the newer Sherwood regs and the BC is newer it's not a bad deal. The tank is easy, look at the numbers on the top if it's a 3ALxxxx it is aluminum, if it is a 3AAxxxx it is steel. The xxxx's are the working pressure, commonly 3000, 2250 and others.

Check the VIP and Hydro date on the tank too. If you need to have it VIP'd and hydro'ed before you can get it filled it becomes less of a deal.

My only concern is that you are from Minnesota. Are you planning to dive local? Tht would most likely require more than a tropical wetsuit. The Oasis is a good reg. Rugged, reliable and easy to get serviced. BTW parts kits for the Sherwood regs are around 12-15 bucks so if a shop tries to hit you up for much more for parts beware. If it's like lp95 tank that ios a good deal even if it needs a hydro and vis. which I'm guessing it may. If it;s a 72 still a good tank but they can be picked up from those who haven't a clue for 50-75.

Yeah I would dive that stuff around home. Except for the wetsuit. I figured I could post it online and sell it or just keep it for playing around at the cabin.

I did find out that the BC is a Mares Vector 1000, but from what I can see Mares has been making that model for a while. So I don't know how old it it. She was supposed to send more photos but still hasn't, its an hour drive from where I'm at so its kind of a time investment to head over if the set isn't what they are describing.

If everything looks good and fits, I would go for it. I did something similar to get started diving this spring - spent about $300 plus I bartered a bike trailer for a tank. I figured once I use the gear for several months to a year, I will figure out what I like and don't like, and later I can upgrade over time as need be. But for now I have gear that works, and I got to go diving Saturday!

I've bought a couple of used sets, the latest about a year ago. I paid more than your listed $400 but I did research it and think I got a good deal. As mentioned earlier remember that you will need to have it all serviced before use.

I bought a Mares set with the Vector 1000 mrs, Abyss reg, Dacor Viper octo,3 gauge console fins, don't remember the name too lazy too look,5mm Mares wetsuit, sold, it was too short, 2al80 tanks, 1year from hydro, but vip'd looked like they were never wet, dive bag etc. Did not include a mask,snorkel, knife or light. I still think I got a good deal, but if you're not sure see if you can have a shop check it for you.
