I'm a Fish!
Quick question for the BP/W folks...

I recently was given a BP/W setup to try: Halcyon Evolve wing, ss bp, STA.

So, from my reading I understand this wing will not perfom well with a single tank. Will it however, give me a basic feel for the set-up?

Thanks, D

I'm not sure what size the wing is, but yeah I would guess so. Not sure what your training is but have you thought about dbls?

The wing is a dbls wing and has 40 lb lift... I have though about doubles and will in the future for the beach dives... For right now a single works well on the boats.. I find i can ofter do both my dives with one HP 120 so dbls is not needed on the boats...

Cool, I dove an 80# wing with a single and looked like a taco....what can I say I was in a pinch. You can always just bring bands with you and band up 2 80's on the boat. Just make sure you get the training first before you decide dbl up unless you already have.

It will definitely give you a feel for it. I dove a 40# Oxycheq doubles wing w/ single HP100's and HP80's for a while before getting a Mach V single tank wing. A 40# wing is not really all that big, it will wrap around some, but you may or may not notice any difference, especially if you've never tried a BPW before. If you are weighted right, there's not much air in the wing anyway.

It's not like you are going to plummet to the bottom, rocket to the surface or otherwise get really screwed up just because you used a non-optimized wing. However, the scuba police may come knocking at the door :)

I have just been told there was a SCUBA violation in this thread???

FWIW I purchased a DiveRite REC wing which has 50# lift and is definitely not intended as a singles wing (even bungeed) but I was told by many that they used it with both singles and doubles. I believe the only real concern is that with the taco effect, you may have a tough time reaching your inflator and dump valves depending on where they are located on the wing. I wound up purchasing a Venture to dive singles with and kept the REC for when I eventually go dbls.

why does a 40# wing have to be assumed it is for doubles. i am not all that familiar with halcyon.

i have a 65# wing on a standard back inflation zeagle bc. granted it is the tech bc, but it is set up for singles. my father uses a zeagle bp/w with a 44# ranger blader for a single tank setup. if the bp has the ability to be set up for single tank use, go for it. at least you will get the feel for a back inflation set up, and have the ability to reconfigure your gear as you advance in your diving.

That was my thoughts too... I currently dive a Hollis HD 100 so I am looking to streamline a little more... The wing is a little big in size rather than lift... I rarely use my current BC for lift as my trim is pretty good with the hp 100's... My plan is to get a singles wing to further streamline my rig if i like the feel of the bp/w... Thanks for all the responses...

Can i use my get out of jail free card...

.

That is because the Evolve is a wing built for doubles.

You can get a singles adapter for around $50, but I'm not sure if the wing will safely accommodate a single cylinder... check with Extreme Exposure, they sell the Halcyon line
