Croatia in September

I'm going to be spending three days each in the Pula area, the Split area, and the Dubrovnik area. This is a vacation with the wife (i.e. not a "dive trip), but I would like to get a dive or two in. Anyone have any recommendations for "must do" dives? North? Central? South?

September is kinda empty in Croatia, as all European summer vacations end in mid/late August.

I would suggest you try diving the offshore cliffs in Kornati National park (google it), that is about 60miles north of Split. Dont expect to see much fish life in under 80-100fsw, as they have overfished most of the shallows.

In north Adriatic you should dive some wrecks. Some of them are quite shallow. For example Elhawi Star, SIgrid, Lina, Peltastis, Baron Gautsch etc. That's what I would do in north...

Kornati National park looks interesting. But also, I must say my first love is wreck diving.

I don't mind diving deeper (circa 50m), but I think shallow dives would be preferred from a perspective of time and money (I've read that trimix can be fairly expensive there).

What temperature ranges could I expect? Do I need to bring my drysuit or is renting a wetsuit a reasonable way to go?



Edit: The Taranto and s57 wrecks (Dubrovnik area) look great! Any ideas about a dive op?

5mm is norm in Adriatic, late summer (Sept) temp should be ~70F.

My son will be studying in Dubrovnik for the fall term and wanted to do some diving while he is there. He has not been able to find a dive shop that will rent to him, make arrangements for boat dives, etc. He has found that all of the LDS cater to the cruise ship business and hotels only. Do any of you have suggestions for locations he can try to contact? Thanks

Bob, unfortunately, I must say good luck with your quest. As the tourist season ends, most of the diving centers around Dubrovnik close their doors until mid April/early May...

Mark, for the S57 you'll probably want to contact these guys:

If you have time to spare, plan to visit the island Vis to do a couple of dives there, you'll not regret it! :cool2:

As far as Pula goes, you can take either of these and go see the Baron Gautsch (or other wrecks):
