CDNN posted incorrect story...

Don't worry, most people didn't need to read any further than "CDNN posted..." to know that it was an "incorrect, extemely exagerated story."

once you figure out how Google or other search engines base their ranking, you can put certain items in your website source code (at specific locations) so that it will rank it based on that.

A perfect example of that is Scubaboard does the same thing so that threads are ranked higher in google in searches. Many other companies do the same thing.

That's actually NOT how google works. The main weighting of google's search engine is the number of other, relevant sites that a particular page links to and from. For example: If a million websites about trucks all link to ford.com for info about F-150 trucks, that page pn ford.com will come out higher on a google search than some random page that contains the phrase "F-150" hidden in the source code a million times. Why? Because google's methodology assumes that if lots of OTHER sites about trucks (relevance) are linking to a single certain page, then THAT ONE PAGE must be the best, most relevant site.

The main reason CDNN shows up is they link to lots of diving websites/stories and a lot of diving websites/stories link to them. In fact, the links to CDNN that people posted in this thread will have the unfortunate effect of INCREASING the relevance of CDNN in google's search methodology. Particularly relative to the story about Tilden's dive center. (Folks may want to edit their posts to remove those links if they DON'T want this to happen.)

ScubaBoard posts rank high on google searches for the same reason. There's lots of highly relevant linking to and from ScubaBoard, so google assumes (correctly) that ScubaBoard is a very relevant site for information about scuba diving.

not entirely true....

as an example, there a few dive shops that have figured out how googlebot searches sites and have creatively made sure their sites come up first.

Often before the own manufacturers website. (much to the manufacturer's displeasure that they have whinned about it to the LDS's)

You're part right as well. In the ABSENCE of "site linking" and "site relevance" information, brute-force key word coding will in fact elevate search results. My point was however, that that's not how CDNN or ScubaBoard comes to the top.

I had not heard of CDNN until the other day, and yet here is another story which calls it into question. I get the distinct impression I have not missed a thing.

Well known phenomena in the UK for fairly large and supposedly respected news agencies to monitor internet forums and blogs to get stories from.
Fair number of incidents of rumours started on a forum to be "news" in a week with absolutely no substance at all.

I cant see the US being any different - journalists are lazy world wide.

I used to run an internet campaign for a manufacturing company. Through the use of GoogleAds, you can pay to have your website come up first in searches based on whatever words you are willing to pay for. If you pay more than someone else for that word, you will come up ahead of them. Google will even let you know if your bid will place you number one or in the top XX%. Bots are the catch all, but in today's market driven internet, money talks...

I wouldn't call CDNN stories being laxy journalist.

They have clearly in many cases taken someone elses story and put an evil twist on it. Often to add fake zest to the story.

they have also stolen images and stories from other respectful sites and claimed them as their own.

They've also prompted "attacks" on several commercial agencies and operations.

I have no respect for them. They are as fake and wortheless as they seem.

If you google CDNN and Tildens, you will find that this brand new thread ranks just behind it. It should overtake it in a day or two.
