I am leaving for Montego Bay,Jamaica on October 5th, for 1 week of diving.

This will be my first visit to Jamaica.

What kind of diving shoud I be expecting ... I have heard that there are a couple of wrecks. Am I gonna see only fish and corals ?

I know that water is going to be merky after both hurricanes Gustav and Ike.

:coffee: Thanks

When I was there in Nov 2000, the coral was mostly dead and laying on the bottom. The only fish I seen were in the fishermans traps.

Well that's a gross exageration. I was in MoBay for New Years 2007. The diving is certainly not top rate there, but it wasn't THAT bad. A lot of people on these boards have a real thing against Jamaica.
A lot depends on what sites you go to. Sites close to cruise ships ports, or busy towns, in many areas of the Caribbean are not as good as sites further out. Unfortunately, I have seen dead coral in a lot of so-called "wonderful" dive destinations. The multitudes of cruise ships, massive over development, and over-fishing are much to blame for the degeneration of once fabulous dive destinations every where.
And of course don't forget global warming, which doesn't just concentrate its effects on Jamaica! (sorry, couldn't resist adding that
Negril is better than MoBay for diving conditions, and there wasn't a ton of fish in MoBay, but it is certainly NOT devoid of fish (and eels and turtles) outside of traps, and the coral is NOT all dead. Plus the water is warm and the viz is great. Get yourself a decent dive guide for sure, and go with a positive attitude and you'll have fun.

Just a few non-dead, non-trapped, things in MoBay:

Nice to see those pic's. I'm going to Sandals Dunn's River in April. How's the diving near there?

Thanks DiverDebbie :D

Ontwreckdiver post was almost depressing :depressed: .

Made me wanna go diving in the resort's pool :rofl3:

Jokes aside, I'm more into wrecks than reef/fish ... Not much difference between a cuban yellowtail snapper and a jamaican yellowtail snapper  Caribbean fish all look alike, but wrecks are different !!!

:D And I should hit the 100th dive while in Jamaica :cool2:

I know! When I read it I thought... nice, way to be a pessimist and but a damper on someone's vacation!
I think because I dive here in cold, murky water, without a lot of life (comparitive to many other places), I have learned to 1) always make the best of any diving, and 2) appreciate warm, clear water! LOL
The water apparently only takes about a week to clear, so it should be just fine.

Congrats on your upcoming 100th dive! You know the "tradition" is to do it naked? I did mine in cold water, so that was MY excuse not to

We didn't dive any wrecks in MoBay, but check around, that doesn't mean there aren't any. We did a couple in Negril but they weren't much. If you want great wrecks you should come here! We're sinking a new one too in about a year. My husband went and worked on prepping it.

Anyway, do check out MoBay topside. We absolutely love Jamaica for the people and culture.
