Shark Week maybe not but Shark Diving absolutely… I did lots of shark diving when I was still living in South Africa. Did the Great Whites in Cape Town, The Tigers, The Zambezi (Bull Shark) and Raggie's in Aliwal Shoal in Durban and the pregnant female Raggies in Sodwana... Awesome days those where!

One of my favorite sharkweek shows is Great White Shark - Uncaged; and a show that aired last year called Sharkman, where a diver would hypnotize sharks - including a great white and some big tiger sharks

Ty for sharing that. I will be diving with those beauties in the Bahamas in Nov. with Shark Diver Magazine! I can't wait! They are so amazing!

Did you get your issue of Shark Diver Magazine last week? I just received issue #18 in the mail

Good luck in the Bahamas - I am off to Isla Guadalupe in 2 1/2 weeks to see (hopefully) some great whites

I tend to get mine a little late (SD Magazine)...got to love apartments. So it should be in this week. Best of luck to you in Guadalupe...if airfare wasn't so crazy, I would have been out there diving with you! I can drive down to W.PALM FL and get on the boat. Good thing about that is no weight issue on luggage!

Happy diving with my shark beauties!

PS the epsiode of SHARKMAN and the tetonic state of sharks was amazing and the best show they ever had on Shark Week!

Personally, I don't like Shark Week
It vilifies sharks more than informs the public.
It brings a few extremely rare shark bites to the forefront and turns them into soap opera TV with all the Drama of a serial killer.

Even I get freaked out and start looking around for the attacker after a week of this crap. And I think sharks Rule! In the end, I am willing to bet it hurts sharks and their reputation more than supports.

But I am only one man it it is only my opinion.
I think you may be right. I think if an average person watches 10 shows that say "sharks are our friends", then one show of people getting unmercifully and brutally attacked, bleeding out on the beach while their now blood soaked friends who pulled them from the water have panic attacks, that one show nullifies the 10 I bet.

The airfare was $350 roundtrip from Tampa to San Diego. I would like to do the Tiger Beach dive also - from a cage though :D

I agree

You have to understand TV entertains people - I don't agree with all they show.
But for sure sharks are not a killing machine

Television is intended to attract advertisers. Advertisers are attracted to ratings. Theses shows are produced to attract viewers and so on.

Shark week is one of the most popular weeks in the Discovery Channels schedule. While it may come under ridicule by those who dive and others who want to protect sharks, (like many of us here) we have to understand that we do not account for a large enough percentage of viewers to change their minds.

What we can do is support one or more of the Shark and Marine Life protection organizations. With their efforts in lobbying governments and public education and awareness programs change will happen.

We should continue to let the Discovery Channel know of our displeasure of them showing sharks as the “mindless killing machines” and how shows like Sharkwater would really serve them and the public better.

For me, I’ll stick to watching Dirty Jobs and the Deadliest Catch.

The only thing that really bugs me is when everyone blames sharks for biting or scaring or just being there. Hello? I'm pretty sure most of them were there first. We got the land. They got the ocean. Right?

The one thing you would not say after watching shark week is that sharks are not dangerous. This is called reality. They are wild animals. They need to be treated with respect.

If we filled up shark week with the documentaries you guys want, we'll have more Markus Grohs out there.

I agree that there should be more content about finning but I would discourage shows that might encourage unsafe behavior/diving.
